This story starts with the sun.
Long before time had a name, a single drop of sunlight fell from the heavens. From this small drop grew a magical golden flower.
Now, this was no ordinary flower. It had the ability to heal the sick and injured.
Centuries passed, and a hop, skip, and a leap away from this flower grew a kingdom. This kingdom was ruled by a beloved king a queen. King Ray, and Queen Maya.
The queen, well, she was about to have a baby, but this wasn't her first giving birth. Only a year before she had given birth to a young prince.
But this time was different.
She got sick.
Realy sick.
The king tried everything to heal her, to restore her health, but nothing worked.
She was running out of time, and that's normally when people begin to search for a miracle. The legend of the golden flower was uncovered and the kingdom began a frantic search for it.
The only thing that could heal their beloved queen.
Although, someone had already found the flower.
Instead of sharing the sun's gift, a woman by the name of Harumi hoarded its healing power to keep herself young for hundreds of years.
And all she had to do was sing a special song.
One day, the kingdom stumbled on the flower, and Harumi was forced to flee. The flower was uprooted and hurried off to the queen. Much to Harimi's disliking.
The flower arrived at the castle and was brewed into tea. It was administered to the queen and she made a full recovery.
A healthy baby girl, a princess, was born. With hair matching the golden flower that gave her life.
To celebrate her birth, the king a queen launched a flying lantern into the sky, accompanied by their close friend Misako, and her young newborn.
And for that one moment, everything was perfect.
Until disaster struck.
One night, shortly after her birth, an old Harimi snuck into the royal nursery.
She began to sing and was surprised when the princess's hair began to glow with the same light as the golden flower.
Delighted, Harumi cut a string of the newborn's hair, only to find it turned coal black when cut.
Alarmed by the cries, Misako was the first one to reach the nursery. Years later, she wished she hadn't.
Harumi bundled up the princess and jumped off the balcony before Misako could do anything.
Little did she know, there was another baby in the blanket. Misako's own child.
The kingdom searched and searched, but they couldn't find either child. For deep within the forest, in a hidden tower, Harumi raised the children as her own.
Harumi had found her new magic flower, but this time she was determined to keep it to herself.
"Why can't we go outside?"
"The outside world is a dangerous place. Filled with horrible, selfish people. You must stay here, where you're safe... Do you understand flowers?"
"Yes, Mother."
But the walls of that tower could not hide everything.
Each year on the princess's birthday, the royal family released thousands of lanterns into the sky. In hope that one day, their lost children would return.
