"let's stop seeing each other,"
lee haru froze at the unexpected statement coming out of her boyfriend's mouth. the fork she was holding slipped through her hands, making a loud clinking sound as it fell and hit the floor.
she was at lost of words. her brain had troubles processing the statement and no words could escape from her mouth.
it's going to be their fifth anniversary next month, and everything seemed to be going well. no long fights nor huge disagreements going on. they were almost each other's worlds, or at least that's what she thought.
"suddenly?" questioned the girl at the verge of tears. though her vision started to become blurry, it did not stop her from fixedly staring at her boyfriend's emotionless face.
"i've thought-" jaehyun let out a heavy sigh. he couldn't manage to continue his words as haru's sob slowly filled the private restaurant room they were in.
"i'll do better, jae.."
her soft, fragile hands reach for his and slowly grabbing them while trembling.
"i-i'm sorry! i-i will make more time for us on weekends! a-and if you want' i'll stop hanging out with doyoung-"
"lee haru!"
it was the first time for jaehyun to ever raise his voice at her. he sounded as sorrowful as well as wronged.
"then why? everything was going well for the both of us. why do you want things all of a sudden?" she asked in tears.
"it's my father," jaehyun finally said after hesitating for a moment.
"he sets me up with a daugher of another large company's chairman so that it'll easen their joint business," he explained in low tones, almost muttering his words.
haru stayed silent, fixing her eyes at the ground. she knew very well what kind of person jaehyun's father is. he's the ceo of a huge company in Seoul, a well-known leader with a strong and cold-hearted personality.
jaehyun himself might be mischievous and playful in front of everyone, but not in front of his father. he turned solid rock and said yes to almost everything he ordered.
"what about me, then?"
the tall, brown-haired boy slowly lifted up his head, his eyes didn't dare to meet haru's.
"you could've said no for me! do all the times we spent together for the past five years mean nothing for you? you're so selfish, jung jaehyun!" haru got up from her seat and shouted loudly.
jaehyun let out a loud sigh, feeling wronged on the other side.
"selfish? at the beginning i hoped that you'll understand but this is what i got instead? don't you know how unfair things have always been for me?" jaehyun too, jumped up and raised his voice even higher than before.
"how in the world, am i supposed to understand.." the girl whispered as tears continue to stream down her face.
the two of them stayed silent for a while until jaehyun decided to get up from his seat and slowly made his way to the restaurant's entrance.
"just for you to know," he said for the last time before leaving her,
"that girl and i, we're getting married next month,"
and at that moment, lee haru realizes that her first love, the person she wants to spend her life forever with, jung jaehyun, is gone for good.
