Chapter Eleven

As the days past things in the castle seemed to take a turn for the worse. Pete was treated by the kingdoms finest doctor, by command of the King himself. Pete was alright, he would survive the attack on him, but the following day he slipped into delirium, moaning and crying out.

Queen Andrea decided then that she should bring her sister in. He was Liliths son after all and despite everything, they loved each other. She road down to Lilith's house that very day.

Dauphine floated around the castle, her guilt-ridden heart heavy with regret. She blamed herself and although her first trip into the forest was a disaster it certainly didn't stop her from going in again. Alexis tried following her around everywhere, trying to make her feel better, but with her engagement on her mind Dauphine easily slipped away to her refuge in the forest.

Kale had become a recluse. He was worse than he ever was even before the party from Sanko arrived. He shut himself in his room. Only emerging at night to release the Wolf. He ventured deep into the forest, knowing that if he ever hurt Dauphine he would ultimately kill himself.

His sudden realization of his love for her weighed on him and he wished so much that he was normal.

On one particular night, a week after the attack, he walked into the forest. He ventured deep inside until he reached a part of the forest that was dead. Every plant and tree was black and the stench of death hung cleanly in the air. He found nothing strange about his surroundings, not realising that this was not how things should be. He was about to release the Wolf when he heard a giggle coming from behind him.

The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end as he felt a breeze travel around him.

Before he could even comprehend what was happening soft lips touched his in a brief caress. He pulled away and watched as the Maid appeared in front of him. He growled, but she simply smiled.

Her hair was much longer than he remembered and her pale face seemed to be whiter as well. "You!" He sneered as she simply laughed at him.

"Yes, it's me! I'm sure you knew it from the start, didn't you?"

Kale saw red, he flung himself forward his arms raised. "I'll kill you!"

He swung at her, but she was already gone. Her voice sounded behind him, "Brava!" Her laughter made him even angrier than he already was.

He turned a threatening growl escaped his lips. He smiled waiting for the Wolf to come, to devour her, but everything was silent. He frowned, eyeing her suspiciously.

She smiled, moving towards him. "Oh, you thought you'd just let your Wolf tear me to pieces?" Kale growled, but she simply continued. "You see magic is a funny thing. My people, my tribe, actually, they are said to be strong powerful warriors, like a wolf." She sighed. "Some of my elders could even shift into wolves just to defend our village, but you know how it goes. People want power and they'll kill to have it. So my people were murdered, luckily I was saved. My Mother had stowed me in a basket and after everyone was already dead, I surfaced."

Her eyes turned dark, almost black. "I was only a child, but already I knew what I would become. I killed them all! Ripping them to pieces, using my magic to suffocate them!"

She laughed, watching Kale. He couldn't move only listened to her. He could sense her power, and he was afraid. She shook her head, flipping her hair out of her still beautiful face.
