Chapter Fifteen
Kale sat in his throne, his head lying in his hand. Dauphine kept her head down as her Mother talked to the King. She couldn't look at him, he never wanted her here. Maybe he really was as monstrous as Pete had said, that too probably an attempt to scare them away. She felt bad for hating Pete, especially since he had been right from the start. Even in the forest when they were attacked he had tried to warn her. She sighed, how stupid could she be?
Kale kept his gaze fixed on Dauphine, but she never looked up at him. It's been two whole days since their kiss and somehow Dauphine had only told her Mother today.
Now her Mother was trying to secure peace between the kingdoms, and he knew he was supposed to care, but he didn't. He moved his hand through his hair and straightened up, his hood had been discarded and for the last two days he had been walking around without it.
Was that why she didn't want to marry him? Had the sight of his face scared her? He doubted it. It had to be something else. His mind was whirling trying to think of the reason why she had denied him. Maybe she never really wanted to marry him, but then she was definitively a good actress, playing the role of the girl in love.
Andrea's voice suddenly interrupted his thoughts. "King Kale?"
He moved his gaze to the Queen and cleared his throat. "Sorry, what did you say?"
The edges of Andrea's mouth twitched as if she wanted to smile, but she didn't. Instead, she just sighed. "King Kale, I wish to know what's going to happen now."
Kale didn't know what was going to happen now. He couldn't think that far, but he smiled for the Queen of Sanko and reassured her, "Nothing. There will be no hard feelings between our kingdoms." The Queen breathed a sigh of relief and he just nodded. Looking at Dauphine one last time, he stood and left the room, leaving the two of them alone.
Andrea turned to her daughter. "Dauphine, I think we better leave now." Dauphine got up and simply nodded to her Mother. She had never seen her daughter like this before. "What's wrong, Dauphine? What happened?"
Dauphine couldn't take it anymore; tears started flowing down her cheeks. She whimpered as her Mother folded her arms around her. "What's wrong? I thought you wanted to marry him, remember "no matter what"." Dauphine shook her head and then nodded. "Yes, but he never wanted to marry me!"
Andrea comforted her daughter as she cried, "How do you know, my dear. Did King Kale say something?" Dauphine just shook her head, she was trying to speak, but she was crying too much to get anything out. Finally, taking a deep breath, she cleared her throat and said. "I know it's true, Esme and Eduar were saying that the plan was to scare me away from the start."
Esme, who had silently entered the room without Andrea's or Dauphine's knowledge was shocked to hear the reason Dauphine had said no to their King. She quickly moved back into the hall, quietly closing the door behind her. "This is all my fault!" She dashed up the stairs to find Kale just as Andrea and Dauphine came out the room.
The Queen held her daughter close as they walked to her room. "Go pack, I'll tell Eduar to get our horses ready, okay?" Dauphine nodded and disappeared into her room.
Andrea moved down the stairs to find Eduar. He was in the kitchen, getting everything ready for dinner, which wasn't a surprise. With him was Alexis. Andrea frowned, they were engaged which meant that she was going to stay behind. One more thing her daughter was losing; her best friend. "Your Highness!" Alexis gave a low bow. Andrea simply smiled.
