The twins had been on the run for almost 2 weeks. It all started when Audrey was walking around waiting for Grace to bring something from a nearby garden so they could make some dinner. "Gosh, Grace sure knows how to take her time" Audrey Grumbled. As if on cue, Grace came giggling from behind the big but barren banana trees though it wasn't just Grace alone... a small girl emerged from behind her. Audrey immediately looked up at her sister wondering why she had brought a random girl home or if you could even call their small shack a home. The girl had a shaved head which wasn't unusual to see, her skin looked as smooth as cocoa butter, and her eyes shaped as sweet almonds. "Oh Audrey, meet Zera I found her as I was walking out to the cassava fields." Grace introduced Zera to her sister. Audrey was cautious with the whole situation. You couldn't just be friends with anyone that you met these days. "Hello Zara, welcome. Where are you from?" Zera looked up at Audrey.
"Hello Audrey, I'm from the same place as you both," Zera answered.
Audrey wasn't satisfied with this answer but decided to let it go. Grace and Audrey prepared dinner and the new girl helped out as well taking turns stirring the big clay pot they had found lying in the village street earlier. Soon dinner was ready and they all began eating. As the girls were sitting around the fire laughing and telling stories, Audrey noticed something strange. Zera was constantly looking around and making weird noises. Audrey also noticed that Zera had a KARANGAMUNTU (a small ID card used to check ethnic group), Grace noticed it as well. "Zera, can we see your ID card.... just out of curiosity?" Grace asked trying not to sound suspicious.
"Actually, I know that you are Batwa girls. I'm from the tribe of Tutsi." Zera looked up one more time and started to whistle a tune. The twins stood up to check why Zera began whistling when suddenly a group of men who were most likely Tutsi's as well came running behind them. Audrey only caught a glimpse of one holding a machete making the connection that they were being hunted and Zera was just there as a decoy. Immediately Audrey grabbed hold of Grace's hand and they began running in fear of their lives.
