Amara's POV

Breath in.

Breath out.

Breath in.

Breath out.

"How's school?" I focused my gaze on my plate and held the spoon tightly.

"It's fine. Still adjusting with the new normal." I said as I faked a smile.

"Maganda, alam mo dati kami ng papa mo hirap na hirap. Buti nga kayo ng kapatid mo eh madali na ang buhay ngayon." I mentally sighed when she started. I ate and finished faster than them.

"Ma, alam mo ba si ate lumabas na grades niya!" I froze when my younger sister brought that up. I felt my tummy crumble and butterflies in it. Im... nervous.

My hands started to sweat and I blinked twice. My heart began racing as I held my plate and got up to the sink.

"Grades?" Papa said. Silence filled our dining area but it was broken when Gana, my sister, laughed.

"Ikaw talaga Gana, ano ba't tinatawanan mo ang ate mo?" This time lola asked. She's my father's mother.

"Ask her moma, she like failed it or something was it." I clenched my jaw when she said that.

"Fail? Give me your report card now Amara." I held my breath and went upstairs to get my phone.

My hands were trembling as I held my phone slowly going down the stairs.

I'm ok.

I'll be ok.

It's ok.

"Pa." With that I gave my phone to my father with the picture of my grade showing.

"You failed your math Amara." He said coldly. I looked down.

It just went down a bit...

"You got a line of 8 Amara." Mama said with disappointment in her voice. I bit my lips.

Think of happy thoughts Amara.

This too shall pass.

"Im sorry ma,pa. I had a really hard time adjusting to our new system." I heard my sister giggled and played with her phone.

"Mahirap? You have everything you need Amara!"

"You are privileged!"

"Ang daming iba jan na walang mga gamit na meron ka para sa 'skwela!"

"Im sorry ma. I'll try harder."

"Tignan mo yang kapatid mo. She's on top of her class." Papa said. I nodded.

"Baka naman nagboboyfriend kana Amara kaya nagkanda letse letse na tong mga grades mo?" Dagdag ni lola at prenteng umupo sa upuan niya.

Papa stood up and gave me my phone back.

"Be better Amara. Me and your mother is trying our best to give you everything." Then give me peace too. Give me love and freedom too.

I nod my head and kept on biting on my lips. I waited for them to finish eating before cleaning the table and washing the dishes.

"Ate! Diba sabi ko sayo ibili mo ko nito!" I rolled my eyes when I heard my sister.

Here she goes again.

"Wala akong pera."

"What?! Stop lying! I want this give me this!" Patuloy niyang pakukulit sakin. I breathe in and out and tried to calm myself.
