(A/N: I'm aware that Harry has not come out/doesn't label himself in real life but this is simply a story so don't come at me for this thanks :) <3
ALSO IMPORTANT: I had to change the name of the DATDA teacher, you'll see why ;) )Harry's mother had always told him that sexuality was something that was fluid. It didn't have rules that always needed to be followed, and although there were labels for everything, that didn't necessarily mean you had to confine yourself into one of them. She once told Harry herself that she had always liked men, such as my father, but she had once had a sort of crush on a girl as a teen.
At first Harry was confused, didn't that mean she was bisexual? He had asked her that same question but in response he got a slight chuckle and an answer that was a bit confusing for a 10 year old. She told him she was unlabeled, she didn't want to fit herself into a category cause she felt like she didn't quite belong.
Again, as a 10 year old, Harry was a bit confused. She sensed his uncertainty in regards to what she said and ruffled his hair as she spoke the words he would never forget. 'I guess you could say I'm bisexual, but I like men more than I like women, so I prefer to stay in the little grey area between bisexual and straight.'
Why those words stuck to him he'll never know, but as he grew up into his own skin and came to realize he himself wasn't 'straight', those words reassured him that my mother didn't quite know either, but that was ok. She was still doing fine. Better than fine, she was happily married to a man, and she had kids that were her entire world.
When Harry was younger he had always known something was up, when the boys in the primary playgrounds would play those stereotypical pranks on girls to get their attention. He had no interest in the girls whatsoever. He was a bit worried at first, was something wrong with him? As he grew up though things got clearer, he knew that he definitely wasn't interested in girls.
At first he thought he was a bit like his mom, not knowing what category to fit into, but as time passed (and by that I mean as he got to see Louis in the halls more and more), he realized he was very much gay. The title fit comfortably in his mind and it was almost a relief to know where he stood with his sexuality. He guessed he wasn't as strong as my mother was, maybe he needed more reassurance, familiarity and comfort when it comes to these things.
Now, sitting at front of his Defense Against The Dark Arts class, he was taking notes with my quill of what's written on the chalkboard, but my mind was somewhere else. He could hear Louis and his friends chattering away in the back row, clearly not working. Harry wondered what it must be like to not care about schoolwork and to just let yourself talk freely in class.
"Mr. Tomlinson!" A stern voice pulled him out of his thoughts as the class went quiet. Harry's head snapped towards the back of the classroom as Louis cleared his throat and leaned back in his chair.
"Yes Simon?" He asked innocently. A quiet murmur arose between the students as Louis addressed the teacher by his first name. Professor Cowell was apparently one of the only teachers whom Louis hated. Harry didn't know why Louis hated him, but he did know it had been like this for years and it was almost a daily routine for Louis and Professor Cowell to have an argument.
"You will address me correctly Mr. Tomlinson, I am somewhat less than amused at your jokes and lack of discipline in my classroom." Professor Cowell said firmly, glaring at Louis as he crossed his arms in front of him.
"But Professor Cowell, I have important stuff to talk about, and this isn't even an actual lesson it's just copying stuff down from the chalkboard. You are aware this stuff in already in our textbook right?" Louis said with an innocent voice that carried a hint of sarcasm. Of course it did, Louis was the most sassy and sarcastic boy Harry have ever met/known.
"Mr. Tomlinson I will not tolerate you speaking back to me. You are fully aware that writing spells down helps remember them as I have told you a thousand times."
"But-!"
"5 points from Slytherin for talking back and for using inappropriate ways to address your superiors." Professor Cowell interrupted.
The class (mostly the Slytherins) emitted a small groan, but no one was mad at Louis for loosing house points. No one was ever mad at Louis because they knew Professor Cowell was a pain for everyone, not just him.
Harry watched as Louis slumped back into his chair letting out a slight puff of air. His friend patted him on the back sympathetically before rolling his eyes and looked back down at the desk to write.
"And as I was going to say before your loud bickering rudely interrupted me, we will be attempting a spell today, much to Mr. Tomlinson's surprise." Professor Cowell said with sarcasm and a scowl of annoyance on his face.
The class murmured a bit with a peak of excitement as no one liked writing lessons. And although Harry found them really interesting, he had to admit performing spells was his favorite part. Harry quickly looked back down at his desk as he quickly finished jotting down the notes.
"You will be working in pairs, as usual, and Mr. Tomlinson, I advise you pick someone other than your.. friends."
"But why?" Louis protested.
"Because you never get work done and you know it, pick a different partner Mr.Tomlinson, I'm not asking again." Professor Cowell said sternly.
"Like who though?" Louis replied stubbornly.
"Let's see.." Professor Cowell started as he scanned the classroom, his eyes stopped as they reached the sight of curly brown hair facing the desk. "Mr. Styles!" He announced.
Harry froze in his seat as his eyes widened. He slowly looked up at Professor Cowell, without saying a word, not trusting himself to not stutter.
"You will be paring up with Mr. Tomlinson for this lesson, understand?"
Harry simply nodded.
What was he going to do.
