"You're seriously gonna love it there! I'm sure of it!" Shouyou exclaimed, slipping the last bead into Malia's braid and tying it off. She looked at her hair in the mirror, smiling and offering a thank you to the ginger.
"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go!" She laughed, taking Shouyou's hand in her's and racing out of the house. "Ah, bye everyone!" he shouted through the door before being yanked down the street.
By the time they reached the school, Malia gulped a little. "It's... bigger than I thought..." she stated, squeezing Shouyou's hand. He squeezed her's in return, offering a smile.
"I'll introduce you to my friends, that way, you can hang out with us at lunch and stuff, so don't worry! I'm sure you'll make tons of friends here!" A smile erupted on her face, and she pumped her fist. "Yeah! I'm hella friendable!"
They walked into the gym, being greeted by an impatient-looking Kageyama. "You're late, Dumbass!" Immediately, Shouyou fired back.
"There's still twenty minutes until early morning practice even starts!" The raven was about to retort, but his eyes fell onto Malia's and Shouyou's clasped hands. He growled, stomping over and practically tearing them apart.
"H-Hey, what was that for?!" The ginger questioned, staring at Kageyama with a look of disbelief. "Hey, you got a problem, Blueberry?"
Malia squinted her eyes threateningly at the male, going up to him and staring him down. He ignored her, turning to Shouyou for answers. "Are you guys dating or something?"
At this, Shouyou, though he attempted to muffle it at first, burst into laughter, patting at Malia's back because she started choking on her laughs. "I'm a lesbian, big brain! Ahaha!"
Kageyama's cheeks flushed in embarrassment, and he grabbed a volleyball and chunked it toward Shouyou, who squeaked and ducked to avoid it. "Anyway, this is Malia! She's one of my childhood friends from Hawaii!"
He turned to Malia, pulling at her arm to bring her closer to Kageyama. "This is Kageyama, but you can call him Blueber- Eek!" The ginger stepped to the side to avoid another flying volleyball. "Kidding! Kidding! Just... call him Kageyama, ahaha~"
After looking the raven-haired male up and down, Malia seemed to come to a conclusion of sorts. "Yeah, you gotta prove yourself to me before you can have Shouyou's hand, Kageyama."
She said his name almost mockingly and sneered while Shouyou turned away to pick up some of the volleyballs while humming a tune of sorts. Though he was taken aback, Kageyama's face hardened. "Why should I?" Malia laughed.
"I know absolutely everything about him. We've been together basically our entire lives, and I've devoted myself to protecting him." She brought her face away from his, smirking menacingly. "minus 5 points for being rude, by the way."+
The raven gasped. "That's not-! Erk..." Taking a deep breath he turned away, waving goodbye to Malia, who had clearly won the argument.
"Sorry, Senpai would be mad if there were balls everywhere. What'd you guys talk about?" Little Shouyou asked oblivious as to why Kageyama's serves were almost as hard as the stares he kept sending him.
"Just chatting each other up like good ol' buddies," Malia answered, wrapping an arm around Shouyou's shoulder with a smile. "H-Hey! Don't touch Shouyou so casually!" A whiny voice exclaimed, squeezing between the two and hugging Shouyou close.
"N-Nishinoya-Senpai, good morning!" The ginger broke into a large smile, his cheeks flushed lightly from the tight, warm grip Nishinoya held him in. "Awe~!" The senpai cooed, pulling Shouyou impossibly closer and moving him back and forth.
"You're gonna kill him! Hands off!" Malia pulled the ginger away from Nishinoya, and he looked at her, slightly angered. "Does he always do that to you?" She questioned Shouyou, who quickly put up his hands and took a step back, wrapping his arms back around his senpai.
"He likes hugs! Nishinoya-Senpai's really nice, don't worry!" He turned to Nishinoya, who seemed to be on the verge of crying. "This is Malia, she's my childhood friend from Hawaii!"
She waved to him before pulling Shouyou back toward her. "Nice to meet you," she stated, though her smile said otherwise. "Grr~ I won't give him to you!"
"What's with all the racket?!" Daichi growled through the door.
It took a long time to calm everyone down and properly explain everything.
-----
"I'm so glad Ukai liked you! What'd you think of Yachi-Kun and Kiyoko-San? They're nice, right?!" Shouyou was bouncing around bubbly, and Malia giggled at his expressive, shimmering personality.
"The blond was cute, but, oh my God, is the black-haired one a goddess? I mean, she doesn't compare to Ailani, but holy sh- cow!"
They laughed together, opening the door to Shouyou's home.
-----
"Hey, are you ever going to dance again?" Malia suddenly piped up, turning on her side on the bed to face SHouyou, who gulped quietly and opened his eyes slowly to stare at the ceiling. "I can still do poi..." he started. "But, the thought of doing Samoan again is... a little scary."
He turned to her with a reassuring smile. She gave one back. "You know, the fire festival is coming up. Why don't you register and do poi instead?"
"That's all the way back in Hawaii, 'Lia," Shouyou deadpanned. "Plus, everyone does poi. Samoan was special to me..."
A small laugh left Malia, and she sat up, looking down at the downcasted Shouyou. "Anything you do is special. You just have this... aura that no one else has."
She scooted off the bed, opening Shouyou's closet and flipping the light switch on, revealing an array of fire dancing-based posters and nicknacks, along with his many different awards and outfits. A shelf at the back held all of his equipment, put away but never forgotten.
Malia knew that.
"U-Um, Malia! Please, don't go through that..." A frantic Shouyou appeared behind her, his brows furrowed in discontent. "I knew you still kept all this," she stated, smiling softly at a picture of her and Shouyou as children.
He held a trophy bigger than his head, and Malia had her arms slung around him, congratulating him. "Oh, this was when you won your first fire festival. I remember your mom was so happy she cried, and my dad cooked up a huge feast for the whole village to congratulate you."
The ginger smiled a little walking up to the picture. "I remember that. Even the elders came down from the mountain to see. I was so embarrassed." He laughed bashfully, scratching at his cheek, and Malia laughed with him.
But Shouyou's eyes trailed to the shelf in the back, and he stared at each piece of equipment, different memories passing through his vision. Some were good and, others, he wished to forget. Slowly, he walked over, lifting his large baton and tossing it up and down a few times.
Malia said nothing as she followed him out of the closet and outside the room, heading downstairs and through the house's front door. It was dark, obviously, because they should've been sleeping.
