Dejun just stood there watching his wife completely break down. He knew that she dated someone for quite some time before she was told to marry him. He felt bad about this because he knew that the girl didn't have a choice.
He felt someone's presence from his back, and he turned around. It was Yangyang. "Did you guys...fight?" Yangyang hesitantly asked.
"No...she's just having a hard time, I guess.." Dejun said, not really knowing why his wife would completely break down simply because she saw her ex.
"Johnny and her dated for almost two years..." Yangyang stated out of the blue as if he read Dejun's mind.
"He was actually going to propose to her. Exactly at that spot," He added, as he referred to the spot where his twin sister was seated. Dejun didn't know how to respond to the information he just received.
"Our dad didn't exactly approve of their relationship. He wanted someone with the same background as us," Yangyang said, as he put emphasis on the word us.
It pained him, seeing his only sister crying. But it was not his choice to make. He simply followed their father's order.
Yangyang stopped talking when he saw his sister standing up from her seat, and walked back to the entrance.
"Maurie, are you alright..?" Yangyang said, not wanting to make his sister cry again.
"Is he still..?" Emily asked, but then Dejun cut him off.
"Why does he bother you so much?" Dejun suddenly blurts out, which made her look at him. Yangyang seemed to feel the tension in the air, so he silently walked away, not wanting to be involved with the couple's business.
"What gives you the right to ask me that?" Emily said, crossing her arms.
"Do you really have to cry over spilled milk?" Dejun said, which made the situation even worse. With that, Emily didn't even hesitate to fight back, as her fists clench in anger.
"Because he genuinely cared for me. Something you won't be able to do,"
Dejun just stood there in shock, as Emily walked away. He knew too well, that his wife was right. He was barely home, and they don't even spend time together.
Three days later
It has been days since the couple left Paris. Emily lost her energy to spend her birthday in Paris, so they decided to fly back to Taiwan earlier than they planned. She was inside her office, busy checking her patient's records when a knock was heard from her door.
"Come in," She said, as she looked at her computer, making sure that she didn't miss anything important.
The door opened, and it was a delivery man, holding a bouquet of flowers. "For Doctor Liu?" The elderly man asked.
"Yes, that's me. You may put them there," She replied, pointing at the coffee table in front of her desk.
The delivery man eventually left her office, and she stood up to see where the flowers came from. She took the card out, and it was from the person she didn't expect at all.
"Happy Birthday, Maui. Have a great day."
J.S.
She knew very well who it was from. She put the card back inside the envelope and threw it on the table. "Why does he have to be so kind?" She said in frustration.
"Can't he just be every other ex-man?"
As if on cue, her phone rang, and it was her brother. "Alles Gute zum Geburtstag, wombmate!" He happily greeted, which made the girl smile a bit.
"Happy birthday to you too, Yang. How're things over there?" She asked as she stood up from her seat.
"Good, actually. Mum and I are going out for dinner since you left," He said, putting emphasis on the word left. She let out a sigh before answering back.
"I know, I'm really sorry. Please tell mama that I said I love you,"
"Hǎo de, make sure to treat yourself to dinner okay?" He said, hoping to lift his sister's mood.
"Will do, talk to you later. I still have work to do," She replied and ended the call.
After almost two hours of dealing with her patients, the girl was finally able to sit down on her desk and relax. She looked at the time, and it was already 6:30 pm. She pitied herself, for working hard even though it was her birthday.
"Doc, your husband left a message," Her assistant said, as she entered the room. Her eyebrows knit in confusion.
"He set a reservation, for your birthday dinner," Ruby added, which made Emily a little bit happy.
"For what time?" She asked, as she stood up from her seat, and started to pack her things.
"8 pm, doc. I'll text you the address," Her assistant said, as she took off her shoes, and wore her heels.
"Sure, thing. I'll get going now then," She said, as she took her purse, and took a look at herself in the mirror.
"Happy birthday, again Doc. Hope you have fun," Ruby said and left the room.
Her heels clicked on the hospital's cold floor as she walked towards the parking lot. She got inside her car and typed in the address her assistant just texted her. After turning on the car engine, she drove off to the said place.
It was not long enough until she arrived at her said destination. She got off her car and went to give her key to the valet.
"Hi, reservation for Xiao Dejun?" she asked the hostess. "Ah yes, right this way please, ma'am." The lady replied as she guided her to a table.
She sat down, waiting for her husband to arrive. This was actually the first time that Dejun did something for her birthday, and she was quite happy about it, despite the fact that they fought in Germany that they still haven't resolved yet.
She was just peacefully reading the menu until a woman came in barging in. "Where is Xiao Dejun?" The woman said, which caught her attention. She turned around, only to see a woman, wearing a tight red dress, with beige heels.
"Ma'am but Mr. Xiao only reserved seats for two, and his company is already seated," The hostess calmly replied.
"But he made a reservation and he to-" Before the woman could even finish, Emily cut her off.
"What seems to be the problem here?" She asked her, and the woman just eyed her head to toe.
"I'm supposed to be with my boyfriend, you see." The woman replied, which made Emily freeze.
Boyfriend?
As if on cue, a black G-Wagon pulled up at the front of the restaurant. He got off his car, not knowing about the commotion that was happening.
"Oh, Dejun, you're here!" The woman said as she linked her arms with his. Emily still stood there, frozen. She didn't know how to react.
"Charlotte, what on earth are you doing?" Dejun said, unknown to his wife's presence.
As he took a look around, his eyes locked with hers.
"What the actual fuck,"
