She also listened in on her father's business meetings for as long as she could get away with it, her ear pressed to his office door.
More than anything she was proud that her father was seated at the head. She was aware that the more seated at the table, the more power he had, was a gamble on his life. But Willa knew better than to lose sleep over it and, instead, happily took a seat alongside his when he offered.
The first time Willa Brasher clapped eyes on Alfie Solomons when he ambled into her father's office, broad-shouldered, imposing, phlegmatic, with profanity rolling off his tongue, Willa felt relief. She was resolute that, without a doubt, he was the bastion of what her mother crooned to her about.
And Willa would value each moment and do whatever she could to conserve them because, in the walk of their wicked world, there is no assurance of a tomorrow.
