3,000 years ago, Earth
After the encounter with the slave traders, Keila and Anos decided to head to the human village although Anos only did to agree to her wishes. After an encounter like that, one would think to stay away from humans but she did the opposite and headed to where they thrived.
As they walked, side by side, only the sound of dry dirt and night insects could be heard. Wolves and owls too with their own songs of the night. It was comforting, the silence, for both of them. Anos closed his eyes for a second, savoring the moment.
Then he thought to pester her again, just to hear her voice or have her look at him, even with eyes filled with annoyance. It didn't matter to him as long as she paid him some attention.
"So, what crime did you commit?" He blurted out and she halted in her steps, flashing him a glare. She didn't answer and continued to walk, slowly turning into stomps. "It must be quite heavy seeing as there are very powerful individuals chasing after you." Anos to continued to remark.
"It's quite rude of you to assume that I am a fugitive." She answered, much more calm than he anticipated. To his disappointment, she did not spare him a glance. "Then, what other reason would an angel be on Earth when you're home is in the heavens?"
"Don't we all, at some point in time, leave the nest?" Was her answer and Anos stopped and smiled at her answer. "How very sensible. Then, why are your people tracking you down?"
"You ask a lot of questions about me. What about you? Why were you in the forest of the Spirits?" She retaliated. He figured that unless he opened up first, she wouldn't warm up to him.
Gazing up at the star filled sky, he answered, "I was curious is all." Then, he looked at her briefly and right in time she glanced at him and their eyes met. Still walking side by side, all felt natural for both of them.
Anos continued, "The territory of demons is dark and cold and lifeless. I wanted to see how different the world is. What spirits looked like, how bright and warm the rest of the world is. I wanted to experience something new."
A moment passed of silence until, "I am a run away. That's why my comrades are looking for me." Keila suddenly spoke, gazing up at the sky as well. "Why? Why would you leave the heavens? A place considered to be paradise?"
For a moment, a tragic look passed her eyes and Anos didn't miss it. "For the same reason that you were in the forest of the Spirits. Up there, always watching over the Earth, I was curious what it felt like to live on land. Even for just a day, I want to know.
It's why I'm heading to the human village. Earth always looked so full of life and I... I want to experience what it is to live. Gazing down from above, seeing is different from feeling."
"Even if it means being hunted down like a criminal?" Asked Anos. She nodded her head. "Everything worthwhile does not come for free nor without pain. Though, is it really a crime to want to live?"
'Is it really a crime to want to live?' Her words echoed in his head and he found himself asking the same question. "So, I take it, after this you're returning to heaven?"
"Yes. I ought to." She didn't hesitate to answer and it scared him. The fact that she was only temporary when he wanted her to be permanently in his life. "The punishment would be heavy." He remarked again, eager to hear her answer, wanting to hear her waver.
"It's alright. I must own up to my actions. I knew the consequences of my actions the moment I decided to act on them."
That was where there conversation ended. For he first time in her life, someone understood the way she felt, even when a creature like her was created not to feel anything. Thinking like a human, Keila put herself in a phase of rebellion.
To see the world and experience are two very different things and she wished to experience the world more than anything else.
Deeper into the night they walked with no fear of the dark. The only light to their path was the bright full moon. Everything was painted a hue of silver and a tint of blue and it seemed the world was asleep.
It seemed that they were the only ones in their own world, together. Out of the blue, a drop of water fell from the sky. Keila had not been on Earth for more than a day so she did not know what a raindrop felt like.
A big, fat raindrop fell on her cheek, falling down like a tear. To this she looked up to see the big, bright moon slowly be covered by looming clouds. The light was gone. The clouds brought a heavy downpour of rain.
Though, it was not completely dark as they both could see just fine. She heard the soothing sound of rain hit the ground. The wind swaying the trees, their leaves and their branches. The smell of petrichor she would never forget. It was raining and yet, Keila stood there, drenched in rain with a smile on her face.
Pure and genuine.
Meanwhile, Anos who once hated the rain, the only weather he knew from where he came from, had never been so happy for it. In all the time he was with her, she never smiled, not until rain started to fall.
'For an angel... She's quite.. naïve.'
Her smile was more beautiful than anything he'd ever beheld. Witnessing it brought him more pleasure than any destruction he had ever done. She was more beautiful than he had previously seen and at that moment, he realised that her smile was a treasure he would die to protect.
He wanted to see her smile and for it to remain on her lips. He imagined what it would be for her to laugh, and a smile made it was into his features. He watched her stand there, like a child, arms outstretched to feel the rain and face heavenwards to feel the raindrops on her face.
"It feels nice." He heard her say and when she looked at him, blue eyes shining, still smiling, his heart skipped a beat. She was smiling at him. "Anos? Do you dislike the rain?" She then asked with an innocent tone, her head cocked to one side.
For a moment, Anos forgot how to speak and when he finally remembered he stuttered like a fool. "Y-Ye- I mean no! I love the rain. I do now."
"Really? I guess we do have something in common after all."
Then, she began so move her feet and sway softly, as if to dance. "What are you doing?" Asked Anos, genuinely curious about her sudden actions. When she looked at him with eyes that said, Isn't it obvious? He found himself more curious.
"What else is there to do under the rain but dance?" Was her answer with a hint of sarcasm. Followed by a giggle that erupted from her lips at how astounded he looked. For him, a normal person seeks shelter and then he remembered that she was an angel, probably from a place where it never rains.
Probably only watching rain from afar. He smiled a silly smile. 'Of course you dance in the rain. How completely crazy.' But when it came from her, it sounded completely reasonable.
He stepped closer to her, fixing his posture and his coat for show before bowing. "May I have this dance, my lady?" He asked playfully. He watched her laugh and curtsy just as playfully. "Yes of course kind sir. How can I ever refuse."
Her hand on his, the other on his shoulder and her so close to him, was a heavenly feeling. They moved, slowly and gracefully following the the rain's lullaby. To his surprise, she rested her head on his chest, cheek over his heart.
"Normal people don't do this, do they?" She suddenly spoke, snapping him out of his reverie. "We're not normal people." She shrugged at his answer. "I guess you're right."
They enjoyed full moments of a soft, slow waltz under the rain until she twirled out of his arms and grinned. "Come on, don't be so boring. Let's be a little livelier!" She screamed over the sound of heavy rain. Her clothes stuck to her skin so closely, her hair clung to her every crevice and yet she still laughed in a care free manner.
Running under the rain like a child, and he, enchanted by her was soon laughing as well. Just as drenched and cold but none of those mattered. All that was worthwhile to him, were the moments of her laughter, her smile and the moments that they were only two creatures dancing under the rain, not a demon and not an angel.
