"Ann! Hurry or we'll end up being late!" Brooks yelled from outside my bedroom door. He was just as anxious as I was. This was our first College party since being here in New York, and of course, I had to make a good first impression.
After a few more long minutes of digging, I finally found the perfect dress. It was a short black, off-the-shoulder summer dress. And after putting together my shoes and jewelry, I was done. I made my way over to the door, and before I opened it, gave myself a quick once over in my mirror.
When I opened the door, Brooks was laying across the couch, eating out of my cheerio box.
"Damn, Ann, it took you long enough," he said without sitting up. I grabbed one of the pillows he had set on the floor and threw it at him.
"It takes time to look this good Reid," I responded, making my way around the apartment to turn off all the lights. I could hear him laugh as he sat up, I just glared at him as I quickly grabbed the now half-empty cereal box from his hand.
"Hey! I wasn't done with that!"
"Well, too bad, we need to go," I laughed, placing the box into its cupboard. It was already 8:30, meaning we were going to be almost an hour late when we got there.
"Remember Ann, I was the one who waited ages for you, not the other way around," Brooks responded, holding my door open so we could go.
"Oh hush," I said, punching his arm. I didn't know though, that after we closed that door, everything I had planned for tonight, would change.

"Are you sure this is the right place?" I asked Brooks as I stepped out of the cab, "It just seems a little...quiet."
"This is the address I was given," he responded shrugging. I looked up at the building. It was an apartment complex. But not like ours, no, even just from the outside you could tell it was for the people with a little more cash in their pockets.
"Do you know what room number it's in?" I asked gripping the door handle, there was no way in hell I was just going to walk in here without a small idea of where I was even going.
"Umm, the text from Avon says 1134. Damn," he muttered pushing past me, "that's a lot of rooms, it must be all the way up there," he pointed at the ceiling.
"Well, let's go I guess," I responded unenthusiastically pushing the elevator button with the "up" arrow on it.
"Hey," Brooks said, grabbing my wrist, "we don't have to go if you don't want to."
"I know, and I do want to, but what if no one really, likes me? I don't want to make a bad "first impression" on anyone," I sighed.
"Hah, you? Make a bad first impression? As if! You're the greatest person I know Anwen, everyone is going to love you. I'm sure of it," he pulled me into a warm embrace.
"Yeah, says the one who's been here for a month and already has a boyfriend," I laughed, rolling my eyes. I still remember when he came out to his parents.
-
"Mom? Mama? Umm...I need to talk to you," he had muttered, sitting on the couch in-between his two moms. I was on the couch across from them, he had told me he wanted me there when he told them, and of course, I was.
"Okay, sweetie, what his it," Violet had responded, putting her arm around his fourteen-year-old shoulders.
"Well.." he began, taking a moment to look up at me, and I had just nodded. "I'm gay.." Violet and Sam just looked at one another briefly before they hugged him tightly.
"Brookie, just because your mother and I are, does not mean we expect you to be, you know that, right?" Sam had whispered, kissing him on the top of the head.
"I know mama, don't worry. But I can tell, I really do like men," he had chuckled under his breath.
-
I laughed at the memory, joining Brooks in the now open elevator.
