Humble Beginnings

Glass shards were scattered everywhere. Tables and chairs were tipped over, although those weren't directly my doing.

"What the fuck." I tried to say, but it came out as a shrill scream.

My classmates cowered, covering their ears desperately to escape the sound. I clamped my hands over my mouth, looking around for help. Surely my teacher would know what to do.

She didn't.

She was similarly sprawled on the ground, hands over her ears and eyes wide in shock. Perhaps fear as well.

"DON'T MOVE" She cried raising a hand between us. "HELP! SOMEONE CALL THE POLICE!"

Multiple hands reached for their phones, whether to call the police or to film the maniacal circus show. I heard faint sounds of the neighbouring classroom's desks and  chairs scraping against the floor as they rushed to see the commotion.

So I did what any self preserving person would.

I sprinted out of the door.

Perhaps exiting by the windows were more efficient, but I wasn't willing to risk cutting my new Cargo pants, no way in hell.

I sped through the halls, my feet hitting the concrete with heavy thuds. Eventually, more pairs of feet joined in the chorus, possibly clueless teachers trying to catch a delinquent.

I pushed against the glass doors that caged us students from outside.

Outside was peaceful. In contrast to the hoard of screaming teachers behind me. So, I kept running. I watched as my legs extended past each other in rapid succession, the world around me a blur besides the path directly ahead of me. I made the necessary turns to avoid the road. I cherished my life.

The path I chose was admittedly not the best. It was the pathway that was connected directly to my school. Meaning, I would be encircling the school's brick walls until I somehow crossed a road.

"AVA GET BACK HERE!" A voice screamed from behind me, although it was nothing in comparison to the screech i made in the classroom. Was that really my voice? I was too afraid to test it.

They probably have no idea why I'm running away. I thought, beginning to lose my breath. I really should have not skipped Physical Education classes.

I came to an abrupt stop at the very edge of the walkway, the inertia causing me to topple into the dirt that framed the walkways. It was a pity I had to wash my cargo pants already, but I had more important things to worry about at the moment.

I could continue encircling the building and risk security guards catching me when they see the teacher, or I could take a sprint of faith and dash across the road.

"AVA!"

I turned back in a panic, the teacher was closing in on me. I didn't have time to think through the consequences. I took a deep breath and ran onto the road, the teacher still yelling behind me.

My life flashed before my eyes, a young girl only 16 dies in a car crash because she was running away from her school. They probably wouldn't even think to mention the freak accident. I could even hear sirens in the distance closing in. Would they even come to investigate a crash?

"Stop right there young lady."

I turned to see a actual police car that came to a stop next to me.

I have the balls to run from my school, not the fucking law. I groaned, coming to a stop as they exited their vehicles.

"AVA!" The teacher cried as she caught up to me, more in need of a PE class than me.
