FITTING IN

Chaper 2 - New life

My feet felt numb as I walked out of the huge glass doors of the New York airport, walking from one end to another took way more effort than I thought especially while dragging a extra heavy bag.

"I forgot something, I'll just go get it" I heard Nate's voice from behind me. I turned around and nodded, confused where to go now.

My dad told me he'd come to pick me or send someone so I glanced through the chauffeurs and excited crowd holding signs. Of course, since we have to go to the same house am pretty sure the car would be sent for Nate also.

But then sudden questions bombarded my head, why was my step brother on that plane anyways? Where had he gone? And if he was coming back in the same flight as me, wouldn't my dad tell me? I brushed the question away as I had a habit of doubting everyone since I had a few bad experiences but I never really learned from them.

"Hello, Julia?" I heard a girl's voice from behind me. She had blonde locks that fell perfectly making her brown eyes standout and a flawless complexion.

"Umm, yesss" I said giving her a smile.

"Am Carol, your stepsister, it's so nice to finally meet you" she said hugging me. "Ok, we will have a lot of time to chat but now let's get into the car as everyone's waiting at home"

"Sure" I said following her into a a jet black sleek limo that pulled up.

"I met your brother in the flight, isn't he coming?" I asked.

"My brother is at home" she said with a slight chuckle.

"Wait, then whose Nate Hastings? And as soon as I said my name why did he say he was excited to finally meet me and that he's my step brother."

"Nate Hastings? He disappeared 2 years ago and we haven't heard from him since. Some people said he was dead while others said he was out to make it big or something"

"That's just really stupid, why would he say he's my brother anyways?" I said a little shocked.

"I see, he hasn't changed one bit. He always says things like this whenever he meets anyone new and see's if it's in his luck to fool someone."

"That's weird" I said. "So what's my actual step brother's name anyways, so no one will be able to fool me again."

"Charlie" she said smiling. "And your other sister is Samantha"

"So he was actually right, he said I had 2 sisters back at home"

"Right - that he tends to be " she sighed.

"You know this guy, umm, Nate well?"

"Ya, we were dating for 2 years until one day he was just gone and never to be heard from" she said and I could see the pain flood her eyes. She must have really liked him but who would blame her he was gorgeous especially his hair. Okay I did not mean that.

"I love this song" she said increasing the volume and successfully getting rid of the minutes of awkwardness that followed her statement. Ugh. Why was I so awkward in such situations.

We pulled up at my old house but I realised the modern structure which was painted a pearly white colour had gotten taller. We had one entire floor to ourselves and it was too big for us then. And with the increase in family it would be perfect but of course my dad couldn't resist adding two more floors. We walked onto the spotless light yellow porch and rang the bell as the chauffeur carried our bags. A pretty lady opened the door, she was a short brunette with long wavy hair who had a warm smile on her baby pink lips.

"You must be Julia!" she said giving me a tight hug, she smelled like daisies. "We've got cookies, c'mon!"

"Where's my dad?" I asked her after giving her a big smile in return as I picked up a chocolate chip cookie from the tray. I had expected to have him at the airport waiting for me but he was no where to be seen.

"He was very excited to see you but he got late at work" she said giving me a pitying look as she saw that my face dropped. But what did I expect from someone who shipped me off for so long.

"I'll make you meet Charlie and Samantha" carol told me putting her hand on my shoulder and offering me a smile.

"Sure, let's go" I said in the most cheery voice I could muster right now to try not to let my first day be ruined because of my father's absence.

She took my hand and took me passed the hallway into the dining hall. There sat a boy with blonde hair, he looked like he went to college.

"Charlie, look who's here!" Carol said.

Charlie turned around and I his light green eyes looked at me confused for a second and then as if realisation hit him he got up immediately and offered me big smile.

"Hi, its so nice to meet you" he said and gave me a side hug.

"It's nice to meet you too" I said with a warm smile.

"Okay, we'll meet Samantha and talk all we want later" Carol said breaking the silence and then made me follow her up the staircase.

We reached a door which was painted black and had "keep out" written in white. She pushed open the door, laying on the bed I saw a girl who had excess amount of eye makeup. She was wearing a black dress and had a pretty face with a few freckles. She had dark brown eyes which looked into mine accusingly and her completely straight black hair with red highlights and the pair of black headphones placed on ears made her look punk rock.

Carol pulled me along with her toward Samantha's bed and pulled of her headphones.

"What do you think your doing? I believe I wrote the keep out sign in quote bold letters" she said sharply.

Ignoring her harsh comment Carol continued "Sam, this is our step sister Julia and I have to go because mom needs me, so you'll to talk."

"Oh hi, nice to meet you, now can you please leave my room or do you want me to walk you to the door?" she told me in a rude tone as soon as Carol walked out.

"Sure, umm , I'll go" I said blankly walking out of the door with her following me as I exited and as if she wasn't mean enough she loudly shut the door behind me.

What a bitch is all I could think right now. Everyone else seemed so nice , what was wrong with her? I should not be saying this she's my sister I mentally scolded my self. Ya she's unfortunately my sister another voice said in my head. Uggh.

I decided to forget about her as I saw my dad enter and rushed to hug him.
