The Necklace

I fell onto my bed in anger and frustration. I couldn't believe how ridiculous my aunt was being. It was strange. The forest was safe as far as I knew, never had anyone or anything tried to hurt me there.

Or at least, until that night when that strange creature came after me. But I had already decided that it was just a dream.
I sighed and sat on the perch below my bedroom window. I  stared up at the large full moon looming above me, still glowing a regal silver.

Alice just has to treat me like I can't handle myself. I sighed. "Might as well just go to bed..." I mumbled. I walked over to my bed and plopped down on my back. I rolled over and rested my head against my pillow.

I stared at the wall beside me, lost in thought. My mind drifted back to that boy in the forest. Strange...he seemed so real...I   thought. I looked at my hand in which he had placed his. He felt real too...but hows that possible? I sighed and shook the thought away.

I tucked my arms into the blanket and closed my eyes. It was all just a dream. Then, I finally found sleep.

The next morning, I woke to my aunt knocking on the door. I rubbed my eyes and stretched my arms out. I sat up slowly and groaned. "Come in..." I mumbled groggily.

Alice opened the door and poked her head in. "Hey...I'm going into town today to pick up some stuff. You can come along if you want." She said.

I shook my head. "No thanks, I don't feel like having my self-esteem knocked down ten more optives."

Alices eyes fell to the floor. "Alright. Well if you change your mind I'll be at the market." I nodded in response as Alice left the room, closing the door behind her.

I sat and looked around my room. My black satin certains draped over the window, blocking out most but only one patch of sunlight. On my desk beside my bed was a pile of books, papers, and about a billion sharpie markers and pencils.

My eyes gazed over to the small silver and black box that an old woman had once given to me. I continued to study the box as I  recalled the memory. I was eight and Alice had taken me to go see ancient ruins of a castle in Romania over vacation.

When Alice was having a conversation with one of the guides, I'd snuck away to the woods surrounding the castle ruins. There was a hole under the fence blocking off the forest, so I  easily crawled under and ran off into the woods.

After I had wandered for a few minutes, I had stumbled upon a small house in the woods with a little garden. Curiosity overwhelming me, I ran over to the old house and peeked through the crack of the door.

Much to my surprise, an old woman had opened the door to greet me. Stepping back, I  blushed. "O-oh um..I'm sorry...I didn't know anyone lived here." I stammered.

The old woman smiled. "Its alright. I am greatful for your company. Tell me dear, how did you find my home?" She asked in a smooth and relaxed tone.

"I-i dunno....i-i just was walking and i wanted to see what was here." I said. The old woman smiled at me in approval. "Ah. I see. So you must be the one." She purred, studying me like I was a strange animal she'd never seen.

"Here, I have something for you." She said. I remember watching in curiosity as the old woman took out a small silver box from her pocket and placed it in my hands.

"Now,this box is very special. But what is inside holds even greater value." She told me. I looked at the woman, then back at the box. Unable to contain my curiosity any longer, I slowly opened the box and peeked inside.

In the box was a necklace with a silver chain. On the chain was a small charm of a wolf with an open mouth, inside it was a circular red gem with many colors glowing light and dark inside the stone. I remember how it almost called for me to put it on.

"That necklace is very special." Said the old woman with a smile. I recall the pulsing feeling when I  put it around my neck.

It was like the necklace had awakened me; made me more alert and somehow seemed to give me great courage. I thanked the old woman and went back on my way. Of course when I got back Alice was furious at me for sneaking off.

But for fear that Alice might take it away from me, I kept the box and the necklace hidden in my pocket.
I kept it ever since. I looked out the window and watched as my aunt walked out towards the car and drove out to the town.

As soon as Alice dissapeared from my view, I grabbed my phone and headphones and ran downstairs. I grabbed my black hoodie and threw it on, running outside. I pulled my headphones over my  ears and turned up my music.

Smiling as I stood in the warm sunlight and listened to my music, I headed back to the tree in the woods in which I had been the other night. I have to know for sure. I thought. I just have to.
