Being Underwater

The feeling of being carried along,

Like floodgates that open suddenly

And knock you from your feet,

Waters rushing over you

Drowning you

Making you scream and cry and thrash out

Asking

'Why should I drown

When they have a raft?

Why should I need to die

When they are pulled to safety?'

And all the while hoping

Praying

That they will pull you out too

That you will be rescued.

And yet

As the waters swallow you up

And you feel your lungs collapse

As your eyes grow dark and your body becomes cold

Yes

In that moment

You smile

Because it was their waters which drowned you.
