"What do you mean you can't attend?" Bas beckons over the phone and Copter cringes away from how loud he was being, "Dude, you can't cancel now. I've already rented out our costumes for the night!"

"Look, I'm sorry, okay? If it were up to me I would, but it's not! And you know how strict my boss is, Bas." Copter wipes a cloth hurriedly against the surface, using his other hand to spray some table polish, "I will simply get killed."

"Oh yeah, what about Wang? Have you told him yet? That you're bailing out of the dance at the last darn second?!"

"It's still morning- not the last second, I'm sure he will understand."

"You're completely ruining all chances of making an impression in front of him by dressing up in the amazing costume I had set out for you, I can't believe you're doing this."

"Bas." Copter says desperately and presses his ear closer to his phone, "I'm sorry, I really am. But I can't make it. My schedule for tonight changed so suddenly because the employee who was supposed to take the night shift had called in sick and so I was the second volunteer."

"And your costume, what am I supposed to do with it now? It's already rented out so I can't return in it not until tomorrow, what a fucking waste."

"Just... give it to Bank or something. He wanted a costume, didn't he?"

"Fine, I will." Bas sighs flatly, "I'll drop by to see you later, Cop."

"Yeah, see you." Copter murmurs, and the call ends.

For a moment there, Copter grips at the counter, unable to stop the sheer dejection from crippling upon his face. He's angry, annoyed, and upset all at once and from the way he was violently cleaning the tabletops, it was pretty much obvious. It was already the day of the masquerade event; supposedly an anticipating night for Copter, but it was completely ruined the moment Copter had entered the restaurant for his morning shift.

He was greeted with the sight of his frantic manager, who was pacing back and forth behind the counter. Upon Copter asking what happened, his manager informed him that one of the employees had called in sick. Considering how there was a birthday party held in this restaurant tonight, that was the only employee who was capable of creating balloon animals and was originally assigned that task, to begin with.

But since he had called in for his absence today, the manager had turned to Copter, pleading him to take over for tonight since they needed extra hands. And coincidentally but unfortunately for Copter's chance at the masquerade event, Copter was quite an expert with balloon animals. He had been taught by the same employee, who was also one of his friends. Therefore, Copter was assigned for tonight's overall shift.

It's not that it was double work on Copter, though, since mornings aren't usually very busy and customers seldom come in for extravagant meals at such an early time. It's the night shifts that are more draining. But the manager has also offered to pay Copter in double, considering how it wasn't Copter's turn for a night shift just yet, and it was the weekend as well. And well, Copter accepted, not that he had room for argument.
