Poor Al?

What if; Al didn't jump.

He was failing initiation, and as the biggest initiate the dauntless leaders thought that was strange.

They watched al go through a simulation and it appeared he wasn't even trying to succeed. The dauntless leaders suspected that he was divergent, and didn't want to draw attention to himself. They threw him off the chasm when really, he just didn't want to edge anyone out of initiation so he could stay; he was far too kind for dauntless.

He didn't try to argue or convince the leaders that he wasn't divergent. He said nothing; letting the memories of what he did to tris haunt his final moments. He didn't get his last wish; to be forgiven.
