Camila's POV

I'm sure when you hear the word "vampire" you think of romance, fantasy, sex, and all that other crap. You think of the sparkling, overrated boys from Twilight who whisk away a girl into some type of fantasy. She meets the vampire of her dreams, and they live this happily ever after type life.

Well, let me tell you about the real world and how that actually works. Here's probably the single thing those books got right: Vampires are very real. They're hidden among us. You've probably passed one on the streets at night and never knew. You'll never see one out during the day. The sun is like a fatal poison to them. They look like any other human would—a perfect camouflage.

Now, let me explain why those books and movies you're thinking of right now are way off. First of all, not all vampires are hot. Trust me... I've met a few that, well, let's just say, they weren't. Sure, they can't handle the sun, garlic, silver, whatever, but crosses and holy water—those don't do anything to them. Vampires aren't some magical creatures. Vampirism is a biological thing—it's a virus hidden within the saliva of the predators. It's passed down from generation to generation.

So, how do I know this? Well, I'll tell you. For starters, my name is Camila Dulcinea Frost. No, my dad didn't exactly choose a simple name for me. My dad... he's a bit of a complicated story you might say. Of course, that might be the understatement of the millennium. Deacon Frost... He's a turn-blood vampire—a powerful one at that. My dad is in charge of various nightclubs that vampires frequent. They are places of parties and pleasure for those who can't walk in the sun. Apparently, these clubs have gotten him in trouble with the vampire council more than once.

My mom is a bit of a different story. Her name was Everly Young. She was human. Yeah, I know, sounds a bit Twilight-like, but just hang on. She was one of dad's familiars—a person who pledges their loyalty to a vampire. She was a therapist, a psychiatrist—a listening ear. Dad had someone to listen to him when he needed. Of course, that listening became something else which became something else which led to me. You get the picture. So yeah, I was born and suddenly, according to dad, his world shifted. He found something that mattered when I was born. Suddenly, the "royal family" became a little bigger. The king had his princess.

From the moment I was born, however, I was different. You hear that line a lot, but honestly, it's the truth. I wasn't truly a vampire, but I wasn't exactly human either. Complicated is probably a good word for me. Maybe even the word "weird" could fit even better. I have a vampire's speed and strength, but I can walk in the sun and am unaffected by garlic or silver. I also age like a typical human and not at the slower rate of a vampire. My fangs are a complicated story just like the rest of me. I have the fangs you would see on a vampire—teeth sharper than any humans—but they don't extend. In order to successfully obtain the amount of blood needed to sustain a vampire, the fangs need to extend. Sure, I can draw blood no problem if I tried, but I wouldn't do as much damage. I guess that really doesn't matter though, because that leads me to my last little quirk: I don't drink blood. My body doesn't require me to consume blood in order to survive. Unlike other vampires, I don't suffer from a lack of hemoglobin. So yeah, I'm like an odd hybrid thing that no one seems to be able to explain. I think if anyone found something normal about me, I might just die of pure shock.

My dad isn't the most popular among the vampire council... or vampires in general. After I was born, he was really protective of mom. Granted, she had just bore his child, so it made sense. However, he was extremely protective of me. Even with all of that protective instinct... it wasn't enough.

I was three years old when it happened. Another one of my dad's familiars was going on a blood run. Mom was going stir crazy and said she would go with him. Dad didn't like the idea, but he didn't stop her as he had vampires loyal to him in the area. She put me to bed, kissed my forehead, and told me goodnight. They never came back. Another vampire, who had a score to settle with dad, had murdered her. He drained her and the other familiars of blood and left them at our door.

Even if I was only three, I'll never forget the look on my dad's face when he woke me up that night. His grey eyes looked lifeless and pained. At first, he didn't say what had happened but just pulled me into his arms. Nothing had ever scared him like this had. The thought that his daughter could be next terrified him.

After that night, I would never leave home at night alone. I barely left the house at night anyway as I got older, but if I did, someone was always with me. Not to mention that dad taught me to use various weapons since I could hold them in my hand. By the time I was 10, my sword slid nicely into my hand and felt like an old friend. I knew how to protect myself from anything that went bump during the night.

Of course, my mother died almost 10 years ago. Even if their relationship wasn't some fairytale or some magical, perfect thing, and even if he's had a bunch of relationships since then, I think dad really does still miss her. Mom was just different. There isn't really another way to put it. She wasn't some mystical creature of the night. She wasn't a super-powered vampire. She was the only human my dad ever cared for.

Overall, I guess you could say my world is a bit crazy. I live amongst vampires. I walk shoulder to shoulder with them on a daily basis. They treat me as a friend. And as crazy as all of this sounds... it only gets weirder from here.
