I squint my eyes as I wake to the morning sun. I can hear the people of Jackson already starting their day. I roll over and check my alarm clock. It's 6:45. "Fuccckk" I groan. I get out of bed, have a quick shower and get dressed. I make sure to grab my packed bag and revolver; it's my turn to check the woods for infected.
I make my way through the busy streets and head over to the cozy coffee shop that I meet my best friend at. I push the door open, eager to get out of the cold. The lively chatter of my fellow town-mates comforts me, and as I walk towards our table I lock eyes with my best friend. Amy Jones. I can recall the day I met her just like it was yesterday.
3 years ago she and her sister Taylor were travelling to Jackson one summer afternoon. One of the watchmen had heard gunshots from a few miles away and had sent out soldiers. I had waited by the front door for what seemed like ages until I finally heard the sound of horse hoofs hitting the ground.
As soon as she entered through the gate I couldn't keep my eyes off her. Her straight blonde hair pinned to her face and her dark brown eyes looked amazed at what she saw. I've always told her she looks like a young version of Katherine Heigl, and I'll keep telling her that.
After she had settled in we were sent out on a supplies run together where we encountered a clicker and a few runners. Nothing we hadn't handled before. After surviving countless infected encounters, we realized that we worked well together and started hanging out.
Fingers snap in front of me dragging me out of my memories. "Bells, stop daydreaming and finish your hot chocolate, it's getting cold." Amy says just before sipping her coffee. "Sorry" I respond. "I guess I didn't get the best sleep last night." "Omg how could you!" She exclaims. "With all the construction around it's nearly impossible to have one full night of sleep!" As she finishes her rant about the construction around Jackson I drink the rest of my delicious hot chocolate. No wonder we meet here every day.
We pay the bill and make our way outside, bracing for the cold winds. Walking down the streets of Jackson is like stepping into an old story set years before the outbreak. The people are friendly and greet you as you pass. Since I'm 17 I did have a life before the outbreak, but I was a young child so I don't remember much. It seems like a lifetime ago that people were living normal lives not killing for food and survival.
We quickly head to the stables to grab our hunting gear and prepare for the trails. Mocha, my favourite horse is all ready for our trip. She's an Appaloosa and when I laid eyes on her I knew she was the horse for me. My saddle fits almost too perfectly on her back and she's the perfect height for a 5'5 girl like me. I give her a quick brush, grab the guns I need, change into warmer clothes and then we report to Samantha, the one in charge of clearing the woods and the stables. After Samantha's given us the trail talk for the 100th time we're ready to head out. (Today we're taking the Mossy Outlook) I tie my shoulder length wavy auburn hair back and stick on a toque. With my shotgun in hand and best friend slightly behind me, I'm ready to go.
