"Help! Help, someone help!" I scream, desperately trying to get out of my father's grip, while he's holding me over the rail of a bridge.

"Shut up, Natalia!" he growls in my ear, his filthy hot breath washing over the side of my face.

I take his close proximity as an opportunity to smash the side of my head into his. Bad idea.

He lets me go, yes, but the only way to go is down. Suddenly, I hear metal against skin and someone grabs my waist and hoists me back up.

Whoever my rescuer is pulls me up a little to hard, and we fall back, I on top of them. I am shaking too hard to try to right myself. Or him, as I concluded that my knight in shining armor is a man. Obviously he understands, and the stranger holds me until I am calm.

I sit up, finally, and get a good look at my savior. He's so familiar, it's like I know him from somewhere...

"The police are on their way." His deep voice snaps me out if my trance. I glance over at my father, who is lying unconscious on the road. What if he wakes up and attacks us before the police arrive? What if this familiar stranger can't save me again?

Sensing my nerves, he puts a hand on my shoulder, "He's not waking up any time soon. I saw a metal bat in the seat of his car and whacked him pretty hard."

I smile weakly "Thank you.. It's like I know you; I swear I've seen you before."

The stranger chuckles, "I'm Mark, we have Biomedical Engineering together."

It all clicks into place, "Oh yeah! You sit in the row behind me in the lecture hall!"

Mark smiles, "Yes, and you're Natalia, the girl who always has spare pencils for my slacker of a friend."

Despite the situation, I giggle at the memories of giving a pencil almost every lecture to the boy who sits next to Mark. I don't mind, though. He's very nice and always gives the pencils back.

My little moment of happiness is gone as I hear sirens pierce through the night. An ambulance and two cop cars pull up. The paramedics immediately take my father onto a stretcher and wheel him into the back of the ambulance. I watch as they speed away.

Mark wraps his arm around my waist after we stand, and the officers gesture for us to come towards them. I'm grateful for the closeness, it's as if his grip is holding me together, keeping me from falling apart.

One officer, a female, introduces herself. "I'm officer Blaise (A/N I totally got that from Harry Potter) and that's Officer Ramirez." She points in the direction of the male officer.

"H-hello" I mumble.

"Honey, I know this might be hard for you, but we're gonna need you to come to the hospital with us to get you checked out and bring you to the station to get the story of what happened here," officer Ramirez smiles sympathetically.

They lead us to one of the cars. Mark and I slip into the back. The seats are uncomfortable, made for criminals. Mark notices my discomfort and lifts me into his lap wordlessly.

***At Hospital***

What I've learned in the ten minutes I've been here is; I hate hospital gowns, they are awful, Mark isn't going to leave my side unless a doctor makes him, and I'm about to get a large needle stuck in my arm.

"Why does she need this shot, again doctor?" Mark asks.

"We need to administer a light anesthesia so that she's not awake when we run the tests to make sure she's alright." The doctor replies. Mark nods quietly and the doctor exits the room to retrieve the supplies.

"Mark" I whisper. His head whips up.

"Yeah?"

I blush, "I'm afraid of needles.."

He smiles at me "I'll be here the whole time, Natalia."

The doctor returns with a nurse. The nurse looks at Mark "What relation do you have to the patient? I can't let you stay if you are just a friend."

Mark hesitates, then looks at me and sees the fear of him not being there in my eyes. He looks back at the nurse, "I'm her boyfriend." She nods.

He pulls his chair to the edge of my hospital bed. "It's okay Nat.. I'm here, you don't have to be scared."

Mark takes hold of my left hand as the doctor pushes the needle into my right arm. They leave again.

"How ya feeling?" Mark asks.

"Tired.. Floaty" I reply.

"Just go to sleep Natalia. It's okay; I'm right here."

And I fall asleep to the feeling of Mark stroking the back of my hand with his thumb.
