“Er - Miss Thropp?”
A soft knock followed by a small, timid-sounding voice echoed at Elphaba’s door. The jade-skinned woman growled to herself, but got wearily to her feet and looked through the peephole of her apartment door.
It was the new tenant from next door - Galinda? Glinda? The younger woman hopped anxiously on one petite, sandaled foot as she waited for Elphaba’s answer.
Elphaba opened her door reluctantly to the stranger and looked down at her silently.
“Um, Miss Thropp?” she squeaked. “I’m Glinda Upland, and I just moved here - “
“I noticed,” Elphaba cut her off. “What do you want?”
“Well, um, I’m new here, and I don’t know the city well. Do you think you could give me a quick overview? Just of the route from here to my work. I won’t be any trouble!” Glinda fixed her bright blue eyes on Elphaba’s dark ebony ones, begging in a way that had anyone else done it, Elphaba would have deemed it pathetic. In Glinda’s case, however, it was just plain adorable. Elphaba felt herself softening towards the blonde.
“Hold up, let me get ready. You can come on in if you’d like.” Elphaba said brusquely, sweeping back inside in a rush of jade-green skin. Glinda blinked. Others may find it offputting, but for some inexplicable reason, she got more of a holy crap she’s freaking sexy vibe. She bit her lip and followed the older woman inside.
Elphaba’s apartment was simple, a one-room like Glinda’s but with obvious signs of a comfortable, if simple inhabitance. Elphaba disappeared into her bathroom, leaving Glinda to perch awkwardly on the only furniture in the room, a rather worn armchair with a side table, for meals. She felt her stomach jolt as her eyes were slowly but inexorably drawn to the door that led to the woman’s bedroom.
“Whoa there,” Elphaba said with her first trace of humor as she reappeared, spotting where Glinda’s gaze was roaming.
“Right!” Glinda sat straighter. “Your car or mine?”
Elphaba’s mouth twitched. “If I’m to be a proper host, I should think mine.” Was that a wink? God, she was hopeless.
---
Glinda scampered ahead of Elphaba like an excited puppy, twisting periodically to make sure her companion was still following her, if more sedately.
The pair had already established where Glinda’s work was: just a few blocks down from their apartment, where she worked as an elementary school teacher at Oz Memorial Elementary. Elphaba had to admit, Glinda was a good fit for the job; she certainly had enough energy to keep up with her pupils.
Now the two were meandering through the neighboring park. Or, at least, Elphaba was meandering. Glinda seemed to be doing her best impression of an overeager labrador puppy.
Elphaba paused at the sound of her phone buzzing.
Glinda screeched to a halt and glanced back at the older woman anxiously.
Elphaba pocketed her phone and looked up at Glinda with a twitch of a smile. “You might want to come with me.”
---
“I’m sorry, miss, but your apartment won’t be habitable for some time,” the worker told a devastated Glinda. “The termites have done a number on it. Just be glad we caught this in time.”
Glinda cast a suspicious look at Elphaba. “But why did they call you, not me?”
“Your phone was dead, miss,” the worker sighed. He exchanged a look with Elphaba.
Elphaba put her hand on Glinda’s shoulder. “Our tour isn’t quite over yet, Miss Upland.”
Glinda’s mouth twitched as they made their way into Elphaba’s apartment. “Call me Glinda.”
