No one tells you how difficult it is to be both the damsel and the villain when all you desire to be is the hero of your own story. All that I want is to save myself but instead, I constantly put myself in danger and torture myself. I do not know how to not be my biggest enemy when there is so much more to fear out there.
Growing up, we see why the superhero/good guy is favored and why he does what he does. The light is always shined on them because we were taught the villain is nothing more than an evil character. Except, as we get older, if we pay close attention, we start to understand why the villain is "the bad guy". Many people start to favor the bad guy because of his underlying reasons for why he does what he does. No matter the villain, the audience tends to always end up favoring them and understanding their side of things.
When you are young, you see Ursula as the big bad witch of the sea. As you grow up and watch it again and again, you learn why Ursula was so angry and wanted revenge. Or Syndrome from the Incredibles. As a child, we were viewing Syndrome as an angry character who wanted to destroy Mr. Incredible no matter how. As an adult, we see with a different eye that he was just a hurt kid who was knocked down by his idol.
Being the hero of your own story is near impossible because everyone just wants someone to save them. Someone to be there for them when they cannot be strong enough for themselves. That's why we see so many books, tv shows, movies, and songs that talk about needing a hero. What no one talks about is being their own hero of their own stories.
