Point of View: Genevieve

Genevieve Collins stretched as she walked out of the doors of her school's debate team room, following the stream of students all exiting the same area. The hallway had blue walls, with creamy brown tile floors that had originally been white. The lockers, which Genevieve grabbed a few of her books from, were old and dented, though still maintained their original silver color somehow. Ginny heard the click of high heels from behind well before she saw a pretty, medium-skinned girl walking beside her. Her best friend, Daisy Melgren, with her frizzy dark brown hair, beautiful freckles, dark amber eyes, and medium skin tone, was easily one of the most beautiful girls in school. Along with Genevieve, of course.

"Hey Ginny, how you doing?" Daisy asked as she matched her pace with Genevieve's. Ginny ran her hand through her hair before responding, in an attempt to tame the long blond strands that had been put out of place during her weekly fifth-period debate team meeting.

Genevieve smiled. "Good, how about you?" She already anticipated the long stream of never-ending chatter that would come from the other girl's mouth and knew well enough to listen in case a question was asked.

"I'm doing great, except I made a 79% on my Math test and my dad is gonna freak. Out. I promised him I'd ask you to help me study, but I totally forgot. And who has time to study with all the assignments they give us? Like, what's up with that, for real?" Daisy scoffed. "It's the first month of school, it's supposed to be easier! But nope! I mean, you've been held up late on the debate team for the past couple of days, and it's, like, Friday. Friday, Ginny! It's supposed to be the easy, end-of-the-week, beginning-of-the-weekend day!"

Ginny nodded slowly, though she didn't fully agree. It was a death wish to try and argue with Daisy when she was dead set on an idea. Ginny told her she should join the debate team, but according to Daisy, that was like doing 'voluntary extra school,' which repulsed her.

"Speaking of the debate team, how's that been? Meet some interesting people?" Daisy asked.

Genevieve smiled. "Yep. There's this boy named Roger- I swear to God, Daisy, he's so annoying, but that's just because he always knows what he's talking about, and I end up suffering from the fact that he studies more than me. And then there's this non-binary person named River. Their hair is HOT PINK, not even kidding. I thought that would have been banned from the dress code by now. It suits them though, looks nice."

Daisy nodded in a way that showed she wanted to ask something but didn't want to interrupt, so Ginny stopped talking.

"And what about Bailey?" The curly-haired girl asked. Genevieve immediately regretted allowing her to speak.

"What about him?" She replied in a falsely sweet tone. "What does he have to do with the debate team?" They walked past the lunchroom, and Ginny glanced in for a moment to see the murals painted by students who were in the after-school art program.

Daisy rolled her eyes. "Nothing, but he's sort of your boyfriend unless you forgot. Allen and I have noticed that you two haven't spent much time together lately."

'Lately?' Genevieve thought. 'Well, that's the understatement of the year. We haven't spent much time together since sixth grade.' She kept this comment to herself, saying, "Well, we just haven't felt like talking to one another. I got nothing against him, but... I'd rather sit through a whole day of detention in Mr. Daniels' class than be stuck going to one of Bailey's baseball games." She laughed.
