You heard the front door close behind Hyunjin, followed by the sound of her voice as she called out for you.
Quickly, you grabbed your bags, which were secretly empty, and walked down the stairs where she was waiting for you.
She was busy taking off her shoes and staring down at her feet when you first started taking the steps one by one.
"Hey, baby. How was your day? Hopefully better than mine." She sighed and finally lifted her head to look at you when you reached the last step.
You put your duffle bags onto the floor and she frowned a little.
"Oh. You're going somewhere?"
You nodded, struggling to look her in the eye.
"Looks like you've packed a lot for just a vacation." She teased, thinking that's all you were leaving for.
She had no reasons to think otherwise. You're going stronger than ever as you approach your one-year anniversary that was just a few weeks away now.
"That's because I'm not going on vacation."
"Then where are you going?" She asked and you didn't miss the crack in her voice.
She was trying to keep it together. But you could see by the look in her eyes that she was worried. She didn't want to believe it, but she sensed something else, something much scarier, was happening.
"I'm leaving."
Hyunjin was surprised by how simply the words fell from your lips as if it didn't bother you while she instantly felt her heart shatter.
"What do you mean by leaving? Why would you leave? Where are you even going?"
"I don't know yet. I haven't exactly decided. Probably to one of my friends' houses or home, maybe."
"What home?" She asked in disbelief and then took a good look around. "This is your home. It's our home. It's the one we planned on starting a life together in and maybe even growing old together in. This is our home."
She was trying to reason with you. This didn't make sense. It was all coming out of nowhere. You're so good together, so in love.
Why would you just walk away now when you've been planning your future out together these last few weeks more than ever before?
"I just need to get away for a while?'
"You need to get away? From what? From me?"
You heard the hurt in her voice as you reached for your phone and your keys on the table.
"You can't just leave. After everything we've done together. We've gone through so much together to get here. Do you just want to walk away from it all? Do you want to walk away from me? From us?"
Her voice was trembling., She was scared and almost in tears. The thought of losing you is the most terrifying one she's ever had.
"Please don't go." She pleaded softly, taking your wrist in her hand from behind you. "Look, baby, whatever it is, we can work it out. We always do."
You just sighed heavily and lowered your head.
"I've always been so afraid that this would happen. From the very beginning of our relationship, I worried I'd lose you. My life is so complicated and no one ever really understands just how much. Sometimes, people don't see me for me anymore. But you do. You did from the start. I could see it in your eyes and I still do, to this day."
You swallowed thickly, quickly realizing you couldn't go through with this dumb prank any longer.
Not when the girl you love more than anything else in this world is pleading for you to stay and falling apart from behind you.
"You really want to break up? Do you want to walk away? Why? Is it something I did?"
"No, Hyunjin." You said quickly as you spun around to face her. "It's not you at all."
"Then why! Tell me so I can fix it!" She begged. "I'll do it. Whatever it is, whatever it takes. Please, just say the words, and I will do it in a heartbeat if it means having you by my side."
"Oh, Hyunjin," you sighed and pulled her into your arms as you watched the tears fall from her eyes.
She hugged you back and buried her face in your neck, letting her tears fall against your skin.
"Please, y/n. Don't leave me."
"I'm not." You said. "I never will. It was just a prank. A stupid one at that."
She scoffed as she pulled away from the hug.
"Why?"
"I don't know. I wasn't thinking."
"Obviously." She said as she rolled her eyes before folding her arms over her chest and pouting at you. "You scared me. You hurt my feelings."
"I know. I'm sorry." You said and opened your arms for another hug and she couldn't resist moving into them.
"I know you are." She sighed. "I hate pranks."
"This one was pretty stupid."
"I agree." She said and smiled a little when she felt you chuckle. "Please, no more."
"No more." You agreed and rubbed her back before kissing her head. "I truly am sorry."
"You're forgiven." She whispered softly. "But you're not off the hook. I'm going to get you back."
"I deserve it." You said and she nodded with a smirk.
"I love you though."
"I love you too." You said and hugged her a little tighter as she began to think of how she can give you a taste of your own medicine.
