LOKI FINALLY woke up from his coma. Alistair, Jamie, and I were there when it happened. I was reading him the first page of my published novel when a tear rolled down his cheeks. His eyelids moved and he opened his eyes. Agad kaming tumawag ng doktor para ipaalam sa kanila ang nangyari.
I lost count on how many times I thanked God for that miracle. Naluha pa nga ako habang pinagmamasdan ang bagong gising niyang mukha. We didn't know when he would wake up. It's even possible that he wouldn't wake up at all. I was so happy that my countless nights of prayers paid off. Hindi ko alam ang gagawin o mararamdaman kung hindi ito nangyari.
Pagkamulat na pagkamulat ng kanyang mga mata, una siyang tumingin sa akin, tapos kina Jamie at Alistair. Nagpupunas pa ako ng luha habang pinagmamasdan siya.
"Who are you?" Loki asked in a voice that sounded like a whisper.
Those three words broke my heart. Loki wasn't the type of person to make that joke, so I was sure he wasn't pulling a prank on us. Kagigising pa lang niya mula sa mahabang tulog tapos pagti-trip-an na niya agad kami? I didn't think so.
After another round of examinations, it turned out that like Jamie, Loki has lost his memories too. Posibleng dahil sa force ng pagkakatama niya sa barko kaya nawala ang alaala niya at naging dahilan kung bakit siya na-coma ngayon. But thankfully, his case wasn't hopeless at all. Pwede pa niyang mabawi ang kanyang mga alaala. His mind just needed some time to remember them all.
And I committed myself to making him remember everything.
Weeks since he regained consciousness, he's been undergoing therapy. Dalawang buwan din siyang humiga sa kama at hindi masyadong nakagalaw. Kailangan niyang ibalik ang kanyang lakas at sigla.
Every after class hours or during weekends, Alistair and I always made time to visit him in the hospital. Kahit isang oras o thirty minutes, ayos na sa amin. We wanted to show him that we're here to support him in his recovery. Baka mas makatulong na nakikita niya kaming nagtsi-cheer sa kanya.
As for Jamie, she's also undergoing sessions to improve her memory. She sometimes forget our names or what we did yesterday. Nakalulungkot isipin na ang dating pinagmamalaki niyang retentive memory ay wala na. She had to make an extra effort, like writing down notes, to make her remember what happened. But in due time, with professional help, she'd probably improve her condition.
