Yet another tiring day had passed on Jabberwock island. You headed back to your cottage, feeling drained. The warmth was sort of torturous in a way, definitely not something you were used to.

Your hand reached for the doorknob, there was nothing that could pull you away from the comfort of your bed. except-

instead of feeling the cool, metal frame of the door's handle, you felt something...crunchy? You gently wrapped your hand around it, and soon realised it was a paper. Nothing special, just a small post it note, the kind you could get at any stationary store.

However, what was on the note caught your eye. Scribbled, in an all too familiar handwriting were the words:
'beach, 12 am'

You knew exactly who wrote it, and it sent a warm feeling through your chest. It didn't even occur to you that this could be a trap, why would it be? All of a sudden, you weren't so tired anymore. in fact, you were wide awake.

Making your way into your cottage, you set the note down on a dimly illuminated desk. It's neon colour stood out against the hazelnut surface of the wood.

Excitement bubbled up inside of you, and you eagerly checked the time. 11:32. Early. It didn't really matter though, you decided to get changed and head out.

It's not like you were provided with anything particularly nice to wear, thanks to the damned rabbit, but you rummaged around and managed to find something decent. A sunset-like yellow shirt that you layered over a white tank and some swimming shorts. After all, it seemed appropriate for a beach of all places.

You checked the time again, glancing over to the plain black clock hung on the wall, ever so impatient. 11:48. Perfect timing! You rolled up the sleeves of the shirt to make the heat that bit more bearable and made your way out.

The walk to the beach wasn't far, though you certainly took your sweet time. Maybe because part of you was nervous. There wasn't a reason to be, of course. Kazuichi was your friend, you guys hung out all the time, so why did this feel so different?

The answer to that question didn't take long to reveal itself. There, on the beach, illuminated by nothing but the light of the bright moon was a blanket. Not just any blanket, but one littered with food; drinks and none other than Kazuichi himself.

The mechanic had put much more effort into his appearance than he usually would. His bright hair was tied back into a short bun, neatly too, he clearly hadn't done it himself. Constellations of freckles enveloped his face, ones that had been revealed by the earlier sun. The beds of his nails were clean; neatly filed.

You were taken aback, he looked different..

Kazuichi patted an empty spot beside him on the fleece, and you took it, smiling.
"woah, this is,, a lot" you muttered, still somewhat bewildered.
He smirked, clearly satisfied with your reaction.
"yeah? glad ya like it" His words hung heavy in the air, as if there was more to say, but Kazuichi remained quiet.

You studied the selection of food, it was a mix of both your favourite snacks, laid out and presented in the prettiest of ways. Something told you you knew exactly who's handiwork this was.

The reflection of the moon in the water was breathtaking, it looked so crisp. Despite your situation, despite every terrible thing that happened, you felt comfortable and safe. Perhaps Kazuichi's presence added to that.

You began to speak, only to be interrupted by the man himself. His voice was low; laced with uncertainty, and his expression was sombre.

"listen, (y/n)-  I'm not a serious guy. but I really like you. "  Kazuichi focused his gaze on the shimmering waters ahead.
"and sometimes actions speak louder than words."

The realisation of what he was trying to say dawned on you, and it certainly wasn't unwelcome.
"Kaz, I really like you too" you replied simply. Though your heart felt as though it was going to jump right out of your chest. Thud, thud, thud.

Other than the waves softy crashing into the sandy beach, it was dead silent. Just for a moment.

The mechanic quickly let out a shaky, yet relieved sigh. He seemed to cheer up, flashing you a toothy grin.
"good! now eat" His voice snapped back to its usual expressive tone, the moment had passed.

You chuckled and obliged, who could say no to snacks?!

The rest of the night went smoothly, you had a great time! you laughed, and even splashed around a bit. It was more perfect than you could've possibly expected; the air was buzzing with the hopefulness and possibilities of what the future held.

They say time flies when you're having fun, and that was certainly the case then.  All too soon, the sun began to rise and kazuichi walked you back to your cottage, muttering  something about wanting to make sure you got back safe while awkwardly rubbing his neck. You found it pretty cute.

The two of you made plans to hang out again soon, and your hand lingered on his for a moment as you said goodbye.

Safe to say you couldn't quite get to sleep after that, your mind was racing with emotion; so many thoughts and feelings. But most prominent of them all was happiness.

Pure, restless happiness!
