Coaching is a structured facilitated learning intervention. The coach and the client establish the reason for which they are embarking on a coaching programme together. No coaching should be entered into without the reason being commonly understood. Some clients are referred to coaching by their sponsors, mostly their managers, or parents. However, the coaching programme is always about the client. It is the client that must formulate the coaching theme, goals, and objectives. The coach's role is to facilitate the formulation process and support the coaching agenda. The coaching agenda belongs to the client.

The much deeper reason for entering into coaching is referred to as the rational for coaching. This answers the question: what are those issues if we do not embark on coaching would become hindrances to individual and/or organizational development and growth? It is a bigger purpose for coaching intervention.

In business language we call this bigger coaching purpose, a business case for investing time and resources. The result is the return on the investment made. This suggests that the impact of a coaching intervention and programme must be measurable. The coach, client and sponsors should be able to determine the performance indicators. They agree on these performance indicators at the contracting stage of the coaching programme. They are key components of the coaching contract. They ensure that the programme does not default into conducting sessions for the sake of pushing time. Coaching is about movement, i.e. a shift from the Current State of Being (CSoB) to the Future State of Being (FSoB).

At the end of the Coaching Programme progress is determined to justify the resources invested in it. It is always a challenge in coaching to justify the positive cost value relationship at the beginning and during the programme. The sponsors invest in the programme with the hope that the results will be positive. However, if the reason for coaching is genuinely formulated and fits within the organization's talent development philosophy, there should be no doubt in conducting coaching. Where there is doubt, the coaching rationale and the programme itself must be revised.

All of us are born with a purpose to realize. The starting point is to embark on a journey of discovery and connecting with our life purpose. Coaching is one of the many ways through which the project of identifying our life purpose is conducted. When we are born we are the responsibility of our parents from day one until we are able to look after ourselves. However, at a certain point in our life we become solely responsible for our lives to continue. At that point, if we have not already identified our life purpose, and connected with it, we tend to go astray. Life start happening to us, i.e. dictating to us the direction we should follow. It is for this reason that coaching must be sought by all of us. And the purpose must take a big picture into consideration. If the purpose is narrowly defined, the risk is that we may achieve the perceived goals and objectives too soon and easily, misleading us into believing that we are ready for the bigger life challenges. And then again be stuck and directionless. So, coaching is about life. It is about the future. It is about positivity. This does not suggest that we must ignore our past, i.e. Our Coaching Perspective. That will always be our baseline. It tells us where we come from and who we have become. One way of looking at our coaching purpose is to regard it as our Destiny which ones achieved becomes the Legacy we leave for the generations to come.

Our Legacy is what we will all be remembered for, i.e. what we shall have done for our future generations. It is therefore a huge life time investment to embark on a coaching journey. Coaching ought to be about big picture in life. The client, with the assistance of the coach, formulates coaching goal and objectives, within the broader coaching theme. It is about advancing toward the Future State of Being (FSoB), which can be defined by the future ambitions, achievements, ideals, dreams, and outcomes in life. These could be private and/or professional in nature.
