"Hi, I'm Isobel," I heard a woman saying as I came around the corner. My heart nearly stopped. Poor Jenna, opening the door and realizing that not only was she face to face with my birth mother, but she was staring into the eyes of her boyfriend's ex-wife. Who was a vampire. But Jenna didn't know that.
"Don't invite her in!" I nearly screamed, almost tripping over my feet to get to Jenna. Isobel rolled her eyes at me, clearly not pleased that she wasn't getting into this house.
"Why not invite me in, we can have some tea, get to know each other, and I'll be on my merry little way," Isobel said sarcastically.
"How about we not and forget that you ever came here?" I snarled, turning to look at Jenna who was still completely speechless. I didn't blame her, she thought Isobel was dead. Which, technically, she was.
"Elena, why aren't we letting her in?" Jenna asked, finally finding her voice. It was weak and quivery, but it was still there.
"We're just not. End of story. Shut the door, Jenna," I said.
"Have you met her before? You would think that you would be in a little more shock if you found out your dead birth mother was on your doorstep," Jenna said, frowing at me. She had a point.
"I'm standing right here, you know," Isobel said, in a sing-songy voice.
"Isobel, go away. We don't want you here," I snarled.
"Elena, please answer me," Jenna said in a low voice-one that made her sound like a parent.
"Yes, ok? Yes, I know her. I've met her. She's a terrible person and makes me want my real mother back. But I'm so glad I met her, becasue I realize now just how great a mom I had," I said, starting to shut the door in Isobel's face. Jenna stopped me.
"You met your birth mother and you didn't tell me? You knew what happened to Alaric's wife and you didn't tell me? That's the whole reason we're not together anymore, Elena! He wouldn't trust me with what happened to his effing wife! And now she's standing on my doorstep and you say you've met her before, but you didn't have the decency to tell me that Alaric's wife is STILL ALIVE?" Jenna screeched at me.
"Maybe I should come back at a different time?" Isobel asked.
"Yes," I said.
"No. Come on it, Isobel. I'm going to give Alaric a call, and we can get this whole thing straightened up right here right now!" Jenna said, almost screaming.
"Jenna no!" I said, as Isobel stepped across our threshold and into the foyer. She had been invited in. There was no going back now. Isobel could get in our house whenever she wanted. I wanted to scream at my aunt, but I knew she was going through so much, and there was no way she knew what she had just done.
"Thank you, Jenna. Could you point me to your living room? I can't wait to settle this with Alaric," Isobel said, smiling smugly at me and sauntering directly into the living room without either of us pointing her where to go.
