(A/N: So, after watching Fear Street which has also only reaffirmed my love for the books, I decided to write this out. Fair to say I'm not the only one who absolutely fell for Ruby upon seeing her character, and combined with the lack of these, I decided to do an author-insert, because I can. For the sake of this story, she is alive, potentially until later. I'm probably gonna keep this rated M for injury detail, just in case, and maybe more explicit scenes later on. With that said, I hope you enjoy!)

2am. Shadyside.

Ryan Torres was in the midst of his massacre across the town, with East Union Medical shellshocked by the bloodshed. Deena, Sam, Kate, Simon and Josh all stayed with the ambulance to plan their next move. The worst part is that they were, by now, too far away to realise who they'd left behind.

"Alright, that's five of us. We're good, right?" Kate inquired.

"Yeah," Deena replied upon instinct, before doing a quick doubletake across the group.

"Hang on... Where's Shay?"

"I mean, she said she'd catch up, right?" Simon asked, almost hopeful for her wellbeing.

The five looked between each other, light shrugs exchanged before the most dreadful of looks came across Deena's face.

~~~
Running down the main high street of Shadyside was a girl, close to around 6'0 in height, if not just shy of an inch. Her blonde hair flew behind her in the cold and lonely wind, her breathing ragged. Her purple and black hoodie clung to her back, with a tribal decal printed in white on the back. Shay didn't know how far she'd managed to run, but she'd lost count after the third block. With the back of her shirt sliced open, a fresh cut across her back bleeding, the wind stung her from all around, as she heard that all too familiar haunting voice behind her. That damned, twisted song.
"You always hurt the one you love,
The one you shouldn't hurt at all..."
She didn't know how many times she'd heard it ever so faintly in the distance. But it grew ever more haunting with each time she did. Turning around for a moment to check over her shoulder, she tumbled over the curb, spraining her ankle, rolling over painfully onto her back, to look up at the onyx black night sky. Trying to slouch herself backward to get herself back to her feet, another shorter woman lurched towards her, before straddling her. Pinned beneath her, she recognised the dark hair, the scar on her cheek, the flower printed button up shirt... what she didn't notice was the razor blade in her hand.
"Ruby, please! I'm telling you, it's only me!"
"...crush it till the petals fall..."
With one swift motion, elegant in the moonlight, and somehow paler, she drew her razor.
Unfolding it now, Ruby held the blade skyward; its faint shimmer in the perfect moonlight, pausing only for a moment as she was ready to bring it down upon her. Swiping downward, Shay instinctively closed her eyes. Feeling a warmth across her shoulder, her eyes rolled to the side. The thin part of her shirt that covered her was gone, her skin bare, a fresh slash bringing forth more blood. Biting her lip to muffle her own scream, she looked up to Ruby, terrified.
"So, if I broke your heart last night,
It's because I love you most of all..."
Ruby's smile was nothing short of sadistic. Shay had never seen her like this. In fairness, similar to Deena and Sam, she did buy into the witch's curse. But Ruby... Sweet, sweet Ruby? She refused to believe that she was a pawn for Sarah Fier. What Shay wasn't prepared for, was what Ruby said next, as opposed to singing. The shorter girl on top of her closed the distance between them, so that their breathing could be felt on each other's faces.
"Shay... Shay... Maybe after my purpose is served, I'll find you again. But until then, stay away from me. I can't say you'll live much longer if you follow."
She made a slashing motion with her razor, across her throat. Leaning in, she placed a chaste kiss to Shay's lips. As Ruby lifted herself up, Shay heard nothing but gunfire. Blinking multiple times in an instant, she looked up, to see a bloody eye-socket, shot out. Her good eye lolled backward, as she fell back onto the road. When she came to, Shay heard Deena's shouting in the distance behind her.
"Shay! C'mon! We have to go, now!"
Shakily standing up, she shook her head as she regained her composure, with Deena and the group already beginning to run away in defense. Shay took a spare second to cast a glance back at Ruby... Her Ruby. In a way, she wished she didn't.
Ruby was now standing back to her feet, the blood from the gunshot to her eye black and chunky. She only managed to see it for a moment, before her eye had almost fully healed itself to the way it was before. And that gave Shay all the proof that she needed. Following Sam, she took off with the group, leaving a singing Ruby alone on the Shadyside high street.
"You always hurt the one you love..."
(A/N: And so the curtain falls on chapter one. I'll be honest, for how long it's been since my last piece of writing, I'd say this is relatively good. But of course, reviews and comments are always appreciated! See you in the next one. :))
