A N A S T A S I A

Time was ticking slowly. I felt like I was never going to leave this quiet classroom. Nevertheless, get this exam over with. But I have to focus on this, or i'll never pass. Which would be a huge disappointment for me since I wasted time studying, and having no free time whatsoever.

I carefully read question 40 that seemed kind of tricky. I gently bit my eraser absentmindedly as I thought about it. I remember seeing this in the textbook. Then the answer popped into my mind, like a light bulb going off.  I circled the correct answer excitedly and moved on to the next question.

I was deep in thought until my phone rudely interrupted it. It buzzed against my back pocket of my jeans. Everyone turned to look at me, and a flush appeared on my cheeks. The professor face hardens at the loud buzz. Who can be calling me at this time? Gabby's taking hers next door, mum and dad knows I'm taking it right know and they know not to call me, and Ethan and Kathryn are at school, so who could it be?

"Ms. Valentine, phones should be off during exams." My professor growled. His eyebrows were furrowed which gave him wrinkles on the forehead. His once blue eyes clouded over as they turned a gray color and he was full on glaring at me. The class was snickering softly, but the professor turned his mean gaze to them, which made them quiet again.

I choose my words carefully as I open my mouth to say something. "Sorry sir, can I take this? I told everyone that I was taking an exam today, so it might be an emergency." I give him my best pleading look with wide eyes. The once hard face turns soft a little. Bingo. A sigh escaped his lips, and he pointed towards the door.

"Fifteen minutes, and i'm timing you Ms. Valentine."

I do a little dance and get up. I flip my paper over on the back where it's blank. I quickly walk out the door and take my phone out of my pocket. I unlock it, and see that my dad called. My pulse immediately quickens. This must be an emergency because I told him when I was taking my exam, and he knows not to interrupt.

I dial his number back with shaky fingers. I put the phone to my ear, and hear it ring. As I wait, I silently pray. The phone picks up, and my dad speaks happily into the receiver. My eyebrows furrow at the tone. Maybe this isn't an emergency?

"Hey Annie."

"Hey dad, what's wrong. I'm in the middle of an exam, and I got fifteen minutes to talk to you."

I know my voice sounds kind of harsh, but this exam is really important to me. Since this is my last year in uni until I get my Bachelor's degree. My dad apparently got the tone of my voice, because he begins to sound apologetic. I suddenly want to kick myself.

"Sorry honey, it's just that I have exciting news to tell you, but I can tell you when you come over for dinner tonight."

"Yeah, that'll work. See you tonight."

"Bye Annie."

"Bye dad."

I hang up the phone and lean against the wall. I look up at the clock and sigh in frustration. Ten minutes has already passed like a speed of lightning. I get off the wall, and make my way inside the classroom again. Some people are still working hard on the exams while others are looking around the room. I go over to my seat again, and see that Mary is biting her bottom lip. Hard enough that it turns white.

I pick up my pencil and finish the test with no distractions.

Spending time with my family always brightens my day. Every time I come and visit them in Manchester is definitely worth the three hour long drive. With my mum's heartfelt words, my dad's silly personality, Ethan's horrible jokes, and Kaitlyn's intelligence, makes me feel warm inside. Since it is Friday, the start of the weekend, I know some people from uni are out at a club or bar as they celebrate the start of spring break and exams off their backs. But that's fine, because i'm going out with my friends tomorrow night, so ha.
