As soon as the words leave Eliza's mouth, she's met with complete silence.

"Carlos," someone screams from the main floor, and he bolts up from his desk, sprinting out of the room.

There's a hole in the door, and Conrad exclaims in surprise.

"How the fuck did they do that?" She gasps, her hand flying back to her gun.

"They shouldn't have been able to," Carlos mutters, prowling down the stairs.

Conrad lets herself slide into a half-shift, as does Laurie.

The two of them stay close together, with the Martiniques walking behind them.

"This won't end well," Laurie mutters gruffly, and Conrad doesn't even have to look at her to agree.

The downstairs is totally silent, and nobody is making any noise, which worries Conrad.

The interns never shut up, no matter what. She had even begged them to play the silent game, something Charlotte did with children.

Matt appears in the hole in the door, a pleasant smile on his face.

"Oh, Carlos! I'm thrilled to see that you're back on your feet. I'm amazed to see it happen so soon, but it's a good thing, of course. You won't be for long, though," he beams, his hands clasped in front of his chest.

"What do you mean?" Conrad asks calmly.

She isn't sure if he's talking about that weird trial drug or if there's another curveball headed their way. With the way the week is going, she wouldn't even be surprised if there was something else to surprise them.

"Well. We did our best to fix him, but he just doesn't seem fixable. For someone who doesn't drink, his liver is in awful shape. His lungs aren't that great either, and his heart? I don't know how it still works," Matt exclaims.

Nobody reacts to him, which causes a frown to come onto his lips. He wanted someone to say something, and they weren't fulfilling his wishes with this blank boredom.

Conrad is suddenly glad that they had figured it out already because she certainly would have reacted if he had appeared and told them this while Carlos was practically dying.

"Oh, well, if that won't work, I suppose I'll have to drop a bombshell on you now, anyway. Charlotte is dead," Matt drawls, and Conrad can feel her stomach clench. She can feel the vomit rising in her throat and creeping into her mouth until she's doubled over and emptying the acid from her stomach.

"Well, that worked. Yeah. She's been dead since last night, so sending guards won't do much. She was annoying me. It was rather unfortunate," Matt shrugs, "I would have chopped her up, like I planned to, but with all of those tattoos - Goddess, it would have been hard to sew her back together."

"Bastard," Conrad hisses, leaping from the top of the last flight of stairs.

Sophie grabs her out of the air, putting her onto the ground roughly.

"Don't," she snarls, and Conrad can feel herself shaking with rage.

Carlos can feel her anger through the link, and it's setting his wolf off.

"If she's dead, you won't mind telling us how you killed her," Carlos shrugs blankly, taking a knife Sophie secretly hands him.

"Well, it started off pretty easy. Standard stuff, just a knife in the heart. Someone, the bitch survived that and started attacking me, so I had to bring out the big guns. I gave her two... no, three, silver injections. It was so fun watching her flail; I've never seen someone look so betrayed before. She looked so hurt, as though she never expected this to happen. She should have been more careful; didn't she know that it's always the ones you love the most that hurt you the worst?" He bats his eyes at Carlos.
