Casey Jones had an electric personality, he was full of energy and sarcasm. He did all the regular things that other people his age would, he played hockey, he was an alright student, and had some close friends.
His home life wasn't always the best so at night he'd make his escape. He'd climb the fire escapes and sit on the rooftops, looking down at the busy city beneath him. Sometimes he'd play music, sometimes he'd just watch all the people that would roam the streets at night.
Sure, he had friends, but sometimes he felt a little lonely. He talked to the other hockey guys but he could never really relate or click with them. They always talked about girls, all the things they did with said girls, their cars and how fast they were, and just all the things Casey didn't care to know about. April was a good friend of his, even though she was a girl she was a little more easy to talk to, to Casey's surprise, he and April were more in tune than he had once thought. Sure, she had talked about guys every now and again but Casey didn't mind.
She always knew Casey was a little different but not in a bad way, she just had never met a guy who was so in touch with everything she would experience. At first, April thought maybe Casey was just into her or something but the chance of that seemed slimmer and slimmer the more she got to know him.
April always talked about her friends, and how they cool they were, Casey thought they were interesting. He would bug her about them every now and then, asking if he could meet them. But April would always just say "Not tonight." Casey would sometimes think that maybe she lied about knowing the four brothers that she'd always talk about.

It was autumn and the few trees planted on the block Casey lived on were painted with orange and yellow leaves, it was cold, but still not cold enough.
He had walked April home that day, he didn't want to go home just yet so he had took the long way, stopping at the park on his way home. He sat on a swing, slowly pushing himself back and forth with his feet. The sun was already setting but he couldn't bring himself to get up just yet. He had his eyes glued to his phone screen , he scrolled through his socials, double tapping and smiling at some of the things he liked. He could hear crickets and pigeons making their sounds in the distance.
A text from April popped up on his screen asking if he wanted hang out that weekend, of course, he accepted the invited and continued looking through his phone. Then he wondered about April's mystery friends, so he shot her another text
Casey: Why don't you invite your other friends too?
April: Maybe I will, but they're busy people...
Casey smiled to himself a little, he wondered what they'd be like.
The sun had set now, making the air a little cooler. He decided he'd finally head home for the day.
He put his earbuds in and started getting up from the swing he'd been on. He swung his backpack on his shoulders and hoisted his heavy hockey bag onto himself, the crossbody strap was ripping at the seams from the weight of his equipment. There wasn't very many people in the area he lived in, his family didn't have much money so they lived on the outskirts of the city. Aprils building was right in the middle of everything, the city was much more lively in that area, maybe that's how she met those friends of hers.
As Casey went along the sidewalk he felt a funny feeling in his stomach. He thought about calling April just to ease his sudden nerves but he decided not to.
In the distance he could see three men standing around in a circle, they all talked in low voices, but didn't seem like they were up to anything bad.
Casey's nerves still hadn't settled though, as he got closer he thought about just crossing the street to distance himself, but he didn't want to give them the wrong idea. Instead as he approached them he decided to just be polite. "Excuse me, guys. I just need to get through real quick." He said patting one of the men on the shoulder. The man whipped around and threw Casey's hand off of his shoulder, Casey stared at him for a moment with wide eyes.
He put his head down, "I'll just go around I guess." He muttered.
"You need to watch yourself kid!" The man spat. Him and the rest of his gang began circling around Casey. "Look man, I'm just trying to get home!" Casey didn't want to cause any trouble but he stood his ground. "You must think you're big and bad." The man grabbed Casey by his shoulders, the boy squirmed around in his grip, eventually freeing himself. Before he could get his feet to run, the men began hitting him. He could hear fists battering against his skin. He crawled to his bag on the ground, grabbing the hockey stick that was strapped onto one of them.
He raised the stick, striking one of the men in the head. He started swinging around the hockey stick trying to strike them. The gang of men backed up a little, which gave him space to stand. Casey continued swinging the hockey stick around. He closed his eyes and ran at the man who started the fight, he hit the man in the leg causing him to fall, Casey began striking him over and over, yelling.
"Hey! We gotta get out of here!" One of the other men yelled over him, he grabbed Casey and threw him to the ground. Casey looked up to see someone else with the men, someone tall, in a trench-coat. "Did you start this?" The guy in the trench coat asked looking down at Casey on the ground. "No way, dude! I was just trying to get home!"

The three other men ran at the mysterious trench coat guy, to Casey's surprise, he took them all down within seconds. A gloved hand reached down to Casey, helping him off the ground. All he could see of the man was bright green eyes. "Head home now, next time don't get involved with these guys." He patted Casey on the shoulder. "I didn't do it on purpose, they attacked me first." Casey said rubbing the back of his neck. "Just go home, man." The mystery man started to walk away.

"Wait!" Casey shouted.
The man turned around, "What? You need me to walk you home?" Casey could almost hear his smirk in his voice. "No! I was just gonna say thanks...asshole." Casey muttered the last part, the man chuckled to himself and kept on walking.

That night when Casey went to bed the events of the evening led him to dream about the man in the trench coat.
He had to tell April all about it tomorrow.

The next morning Casey sprung out of bed and got dressed as quickly as he could, he was always late to school but today he had to be early, he had to tell April about what happened last night. He would've just called her or texted her but he thought she wouldn't believe it unless he told her in person.
He sprinted down the street, trying to get to April's apartment building before she could leave.
The cold air made his chest hurt as he ran but he just kept on going as fast as his legs could take him. He turned the corner and could see that he was getting closer to her building. In the distance he could see April exiting the building from the first floor lobby area.
"Hey, Red! Wait up!" He called out to her, his voice slightly hoarse from huffing the cold air. She turned around with a puzzled look on her face but stopped and waited for him.
He walked the rest of the way over to her, breathing heavily. "Never thought I'd see the day you'd be early for school." April said to him giggling.
He adjusted his backpack and took a deep breath. "I had to find you , I got something crazy to tell you."
April raised a brow at him but let him continue. "Alright, you're never gonna believe this, but last night I got attacked by some goons down the street from my apartment, look!" He lifted up his shirt to show her his bruises and scrapes, the cold gave his skin goosebumps and made the trail of hair on his stomach stand up a little , he even spun around to show April the ones that littered his back.
"Casey, oh my god!" April exclaimed running her fingers along some of them, making him wince.
"Yeah dude, but it gets crazier! I grabbed my hockey stick and started fighting back! I started hitting one of them but then another grabbed me threw me down-"
As he spoke he made swinging motions with his arms and waved his hands around. "And then out of nowhere this freaky dude in a coat came and kicked all of their asses!"
April's eyes widened as she began to realize who it may have been.
"I'm talkin' like brutally beat 'em up, and then they ran away all scared. It was crazy."
April kept quiet for a moment before speaking, " Well I'm glad you're okay, and I'm glad someone was there to help you." She said, putting a hand on his shoulder. "I think I could've took them down myself." He said with a goofy smile on his face. "Riiight" April said rolling her eyes.

*************

Hi guys, I have been really hesitant about publishing this. I'm still not sure if I will. But I used to write a long time ago but i took all my old stories down cause they were very poorly written, so I thought about trying it again and getting back into the fandom now that I'm older and a little better at writing. I used to write when I was like 12-14 and I'm a senior in high school now so I figured I'd just give it another shot. Based on how well the first chapter does I will continue:)
Also the song is called a dream with a baseball player, the concept of the song is what inspired me to write this story.
