**Flash back**

Once upon a time I was an angel and prophet of valour, brave with unquestionable integrity, but all it took was a moment of weakness and a master of deception to drag me to hell, literally.

Standing in a row, we bowed before the council of elders. They were draped in long immaculate white robes with hoods that shadowed their visage from view. "The angel of darkness has caused great disruption in the balance of the world. Earth has become a breeding ground for deception, destruction, death and desolation. As we all know the previous prophets have failed their task, they have not only failed God but the human race. They were to be the guiding hands of this generation but instead have turned to human temptations and immoral practices." Elder John pointed a finger at me; I instantly cowered in my spot.

"You, in fact, all of you are the last hope to redeem the human race back to its former glory, remind them of the time when they were compassionate and helped a brother in need. The devil has unleashed evil on to the world and it is time to purify it once again. The Lord has spoken to us and you shall now preach his word, you are now the chosen prophets. Go and spread his word!"

One by one each angel stepped forward to be transported to their specific destination by the elders. By the time the line had narrowed down to the last person, me, I was ready and self-assured. I knew my duty and I was ready to fulfil it no matter what the cause. As I stepped forward, Brother John placed his hands on my shoulder.

"My child, you are to go somewhere special. This task I give you is very important and will put your faith and courage to test but there is one who must accompany you on this journey, Gabriel step forth." Gabriel, a dear friend of mine came forward. Curls of his blond hair fell on the front of his face as he pushed them back. "My peace I give you, go forth and proclaim His message."

A sudden flash of white light blinded me, holding my hands to my face I shielded myself from the sudden burst of light. By the time I had recovered Gabriel and I were in a completely different surrounding. Small cottages made out of wood and had grass thatched roofs surrounded us. The place was desolated and the fields were empty of children's laughter, all that could be heard was the crunching of leaves under our feet. I was so absorbed with our surroundings and wondering why Brother John would send us to an inhabitant place that I did not realize Gabriel nudging me in the shoulder. "There is one of the creatures." said Gabriel mockingly as he pointed to a woman who stood there slack-jawed. "Did.... Did you just fall from the sky?" she stammered. Her bewildered expression had Gabriel and me on the brink of laughter. Shaking, she pulled a knife from her long skirt and thrust it at us. "Back demons, back I say!" Gabriel chuckled "I think the correct weapon you're looking for would be a crucifix but for clarification we are not demons. Would a demon look this handsome?" I whacked Gabriel on the back and glared at him. "We come in peace child, we are sent by the Lord. Take us to your people." I said in an assuring voice.

Hesitantly, she led us to a small cottage down a dirt path. Inside the cottage people lay in beds coughing violently and shivering under their thin sheets. "These are my people, and if God really sent you as you claim, then heal them." My eyes met a little girl who sat next to her mother. The little girl caressed her mother's cheek with the back of her hand as she watched her intently, hopelessness in her gaze. I placed my hand over her mother's head and healed her. A sudden halo formed around her and she got up. Before we knew it everyone in the room was healed and Gabriel and I were preaching as if we were in a church, our audience hanging on to each and every word we said.

Suddenly a tall brooding figure in a black cloak entered the cottage. "Why aren't you low lives dead yet?" asked a deep voice. Shrieks of horror erupted from the crowd as people scampered in every direction. The angel of darkness was in our presence. "Devil, leave at once!" I said my hand pushing back a few townsfolk who were too fraught to move. The devil placed a hand to his heart as if he had been wounded. "Is that anyway to treat your guest? Are you not taught hospitality in the kingdom of clouds, flowers and rainbows? Also I preferred to be called Damien. The devil sounds so... Cliché. Anyways, since we both know I'm going to kill you, can we get on with it already?" Immediately he lunged at me with a rapier made of shining metal. I dodged his attack with deft precision and caught him by the collar. The demon was such a pathetic wimp. He looked rather puny as he attempted to kick me in the shin as I suspended him in the air.

"Wait, spare my life angel! I have a proposition for you." amused by his tactic to save his skin I urged him to continue. He broke out in a smile as he continued "I can make you as powerful as God. You won't have to listen to the big man anymore. You can be your own God. Command the seas and all living creatures." Not in my entire life had someone thought that I, Sebastian Lightwood was capable of anything let alone being in charge of something. I couldn't believe that I was actually mauling over this. I wanted more privileges, more respect, more power and more than anything their love.

But, what about my commitment to the lord? My sub-conscience reminded me. I wouldn't need to worry about him once I was ruler, heck I could own the kingdom of heaven, be my own God. Yes, I liked the sound of that. What if he was lying, how could I trust him?

Without realizing it I set Damien on his feet. "Do it." I said. "What, no please, where are your manners?" I raised my fist threateningly and he moved backwards "Gosh! Relax. This might hurt a bit though." he grabbed my hand and dug his pale fingernails into the skin of my fore arm. "Just kidding this is going to burn like hell, which is probably where you're going." He let out a sinister laugh as black veins crept up my arm and I felt myself grow stronger more power. The pain was excruciating but pleasurable at the same time. My vision began to blur as the veins began to creep higher up my arm. I shuddered as the overwhelming surge of power flowed through my body, yes. Suddenly, two angels appeared at my sides and Damien faded into black mist, his sinister chuckle resonating in the back of my mind, "Come with us." The two angels said simultaneously

The two angels dragged me into the golden hall where the elders sat on silver chairs. Brother John looked sadly at me. "You, out of all the angels it was you who had defied the Lord! Woe is me, I thought of you as my own child." His words hit me hard. He thought of me as his own child? Someone had actually loved me enough to consider me as their son. My heart swelled at his words but my feeling of acceptance was ephemeral as I saw the grave disappointment in Brother John's eyes. "But alas there is nothing I can do for you; every choice has its consequence. You are unfit to represent the Lord so you shall be what you have chosen over him, a low life demon." My heart broke into a million fragments at his words. Brother John walked out of the room his white robe dramatically swaying. He slammed the door behind him. Leaving me in the hands of the elders.

I was compelled to go down on my knees and force my wings open. Reluctantly I obeyed. The angels beside me ripped my wings from my back. Blood trickled down my spine as I screamed to the Lord to forgive me but obviously fell on deaf ears. Tears ran down my face. This was cruel even for the elders.

Brother Zachariah, the most relentless immortal I had ever met approached me. He grabbed my chin with one hand.

"Do you not see what you have become? You are disgusting!"

Forcing me to look into the silver pool that was in the middle of the hall I could see my reflection, or rather that of a stranger. I crawled closer to examine my new features. My face and jawline were more defined. They were sharp and edged. My eyes were no longer blue but a soulless grey. My hair was black and slicked with sweat. Terrified couldn't even explain my fright for the man in the reflection. I felt a sharp pain in my jaw and I opened my mouth. I was bleeding and worse my teeth had become long jagged fangs. A shriek of horror was heard as everyone stepped back away from me as if I had the plague. I was a monster, condemned by God to suffer eternal punishment.

Brother Zachariah had a smug and content look on his face at everyone's reaction. He was enjoying this to my displeasure. I felt so hollow. I was once again dragged to the portal. I was now falling from the sky hurling towards the sea below at the speed of light. At that moment the world was on stand still. As I fell from the sky I could feel the eyes of Gabriel and Brother John watching with disappointment. I should have felt shame even remorse but instead all I felt was emptiness, rejection and the cold thrash of the wind against my skin.
