Hannah just stands there for a moment. Not knowing what to say or do at first.

" What are you doing way out here?" Sarah asks, breaking the awkward silence.

" I was-" Hannah begins but is interrupted by Lizzie.

" She's spyin' on us," she says with an annoyance in her voice. " She's going to go back to the village and tell her mother and then we'll all be in trouble."

" That's not true-"

" You're the pastor's daughter. So don't tell me that you've come out here to hang around with us."

" Stop being such a wench, Lizzie," Isaac tells her. " There's plenty of apple jack to go around."

Abigail gently slaps Isaac on the shoulder for revealing their secret. He looks at her like he doesn't know what he did wrong.

" I'm not as big of a goody-two-shoes as you think I am," Hannah says. " I like to have fun, too, believe it or not. And I get quite lonesome sometimes, with there just being Mother and Father to talk to."

She locks eyes with Sarah, who has to take in a quick breath from how beautiful Hannah is. The pastor's daughter gives her a small smile, and she can't help but notice that her heart starts to beat a little faster.

" Alright, then," Lizzie finally decides. " I suppose she can come."

" Thank you." Hannah says with a look of gratitude.

" But you have to promise that you won't be tattling when we get back home."

" Of course."

" Well let's get going then!" Isaac excitedly says and leads the way.

Hannah lets the group go on ahead, but Sarah hangs behind and waits for her, eventually holding out her hand.

" What are you waiting for?" Sarah questions.

The other girl walks forward and takes the extended hand in her own, carefully interlacing their fingers together. Once more, their eyes meet.

" You." Hannah quietly says.
