A MEOWING MARIA FOLLOWED KAJSA TO THE DOOR. She'd just gotten in from a job last night, and her feline friend was not happy to see her depart so soon.
As Kajsa put on her green leather jacket, Maria squirmed through her legs, rubbing up against her. After ensuring her beanie covered her ears, she picked up the cat.
"Don't worry, I'll be back," Kajsa received purs as she rubbed between her ears.
She had a meeting with Fury. He wanted to debrief about the job.
Putting Maria down, her eyes fall upon the small box on the bookshelf. It'd been a few weeks since she found it at her door. Having been so busy, Kajsa forgot about it. She opens the box, finding a transporter key—it had two buttons on it - a white one and a red one.
Choosing the former, Kajsa took a chance and pressed the white button. Simultaneously, something bleep-bleeped from outside in the distance.
Going outside on the terrace, Kajsa surveyed the street. Nothing stood out.
When she pressed the button again, the sound came from the side of her building. It was still distant but louder than when she was inside.
Kajsa quickly left out of her loft, exiting the building in an excited hurry. She entered the alley to find it empty.
When she pushed the button a third time, the sound came from the garage built into the side of the building. She walked down the alley, approaching the door.
New York City was busy and always had traffic. It was one of the most significant downsides of living there for Kajsa. The commute was long to S.H.I.E.L.D. H.Q., but she preferred taking the train to drive or having a car pick her up. So much that she even refused a company car.
With no means of transportation, her garage was empty. Well, it used to be.
Using her key, Kajsa unlocks the garage door and pulls it up. Occupying the lot was a mystery new means of transportation. There was a white sheet over it, a big bow, and a note.
"For your first year at S.H.I.E.L.D., Fury," she read out loud with a smile.
Kajsa felt like a little girl when she pulled the sheet off, revealing an all-chrome motorcycle.
"Oh my . . ." she almost didn't want to touch it. It was so shiny that she could see her reflection.
Learning to drive and fly jets was a part of her training for S.H.I.E.L.D. On a job she had not too long ago, a chase ensued with a perp. The nearest thing she could find for a ride was a motorcycle. She never rid anything like it before, so she winged it.
It was the most exhilarating thing Kajsa ever experienced, and she caught the guy.
Now she had one of her own.
* * * * *
Wearing her matching chrome helmet, Kajsa entered the garage of S.H.I.E.L.D. H.Q. on her brand new bike. She took off her helmet, making sure her beanie was on correctly with a massive grin on her face.
It was like the first time she'd ridden Iduna, though the motorcycle was much faster. She left the valet to park her new bike and went to Fury's office.
Kajsa expected to see her boss at his desk with his typical pensive scowl. Instead, she found him sitting in the seating area talking to a man she recognized almost instantly. Not because she knew him personally, but because she read about him.
He wasn't a frequent topic of conversation, but he was well-known and famous years ago. So many years ago, that his young, fit appearance should have shocked Kajsa like it would mortals.
As a goddess who lived life for a very long time, aging without actually aging was normal to her.
"Agent Heimdall," Fury noticed her presence.
"Director Fury," she bowed her head respectfully. "I am sorry to interrupt. I thought we had a meeting."
"We did," Fury pulls her over to the side. "I meant to reschedule. A lot happened while you were away."
"I see," she looked over at the man. Though calm, pain was visible in his eyes.
"I thought he was at the bottom of the ocean," she whispers to Fury.
"He was, it turns out he wasn't dead just . . . . sleeping."
"So, he just woke up after what . . . "
"Seventy years."
Suddenly his pain made sense. Waking up decades later in a world like Earth constantly changing is outright traumatic, let alone baffling.
"We'll talk later," Fury tells her.
"Right, yes. Well, thank you for the bike. I greatly appreciate, sir."
"I was wondering when you'd find it. I'm glad you like it, agent. Thank you for your service."
Kajsa bids him farewell with a nod, her eyes lingering on the dejected soldier as she leaves.
