"I don't need your cheap shots and setbacks
I'm fucking fine so go and take them all back
I don't need your cheap shots and setbacks"

The bell rang for lunch, and Jez immediately ran to her locker, grabbing a homemade pb&j out of a brown paper bag before heading towards the outside quad where her brother always ate lunch with his friends.
Just as she was about to head over, she felt a tap on her shoulder and turned around quickly, frightened at the action.
She turned to see Ben smiling at her and calmed down, putting her hand over her chest.
"You scared me there!" She punched his arm lightly before realizing she had only really been acquaintances with the guy for a few hours. "Sorry, I just get scared easily," she cringed and looked up at him. "What is up Ben?"
He looked at her with a smile on his face, obviously enjoying her very nervous response to his presence. "Hey Jez, just wanted to see how your day was going! It's so cool we have a class together, right?"
She was about to answer, nodding excitedly, when Carlos stepped between the two.
"Hey sis, thought I'd come to rescue you from talking to this chump," he gestures towards Ben and grabs his sister's arm, "c'mon, Paxton and Trent want you to judge their burping contest."
As Carlos pulled her with him, she gave Ben a sympathetic smile and shouted over her shoulder "I'll catch up with you later!"
Carlos asked in a hushed tone while the two walked towards his friends, "Why are you suddenly talking to losers?"
She gasped and hit her brother in the shoulder, "Ben isn't a loser. He's just lonely. He's couped up in that huge house all alone. You're lucky you have me, or you'd be just as lonely." She took his arm off hers and walked briskly.
"Yo, just because we happened to live near the kid, doesn't mean he knows shit about us or our family. You think that gringo gives a shit about our real dad who left us when we were kids? Nah, all that dude cares about are his grades and his gold-digging girlfriend." He paused, contemplating his next thought.
"Stay away from him."
He muttered as they arrived at their friends' lunch spot. But she looked at him, her ears turning red from anger. The last thing she needed today, was for someone else to tell her what to do.
"You know what, Carlos? I'm not going to listen to you anymore." She proclaims, causing a few nearby heads to turn.
"You're my brother and I love you, but you need to let me make my own god damn choices. Maybe I don't want to be friends with a bunch of rude hot kids! Maybe I want to be friends with people who actually like to talk to me. Ever think of that? Or are you too busy focusing on your ego to even notice I'm miserable here?"
The whole quad was watching them by now, all eyes plastered to Carlos, who had yet to respond. He stared at his sister and searched for something to say before she just scoffed and ran back inside of the school, searching for the nearest bathroom so she could sob without caring who heard.
When Jezalyn got to the girl's restroom, the door was locked and had a sign that said: "CLOSED FOR CLEANING." She left out a small yelp and shook her head, running into the gender-neutral restroom instead.
As soon as she got through the door she stood against the inside wall and collapsed, sliding down the wall with her knees tucked beneath her chin.
She let tears fall from her eyes and buried her face in her legs. Jez was about ready to full out sob when she heard the familiar sound of very expensive shoes squeaking on the floor.
She looked up to find Ben staring down at her with a worried look on his face. He knelt down beside her and searched her eyes for a sign that she was okay.
Jez looked at him with pure and begging eyes as she let her legs fall to the floor. She turned to the boy next to her and before she knew it. Her arms were wrapped around his neck.
Ben thought he had blacked out the moment she touched him.
It felt like lightning was leaving her soft fingertips, every time she touched his skin.
He let his arms wrap around her waist and squeezed the crying girl tightly, leading her to cry harder into his shoulder. He held her there for a moment, rubbing her back gently.
Ben had seen her yell at Carlos, and couldn't help but feel responsible. He had to do everything he could to cheer up Jezalyn.
Lucky for him, this included hugging her and holding her close to him, which he had nearly dreamed about the night before. Though this moment was intimate in another way.
After a few minutes, Jezalyn caught her breath and pulled back from the embrace.
"Thanks, Ben, you have no idea how much I needed that." The girl wiped her tears with the back of her hand stood up, reaching down to help him up.
"Hey, it's no problem. I mean, what are neighbors for" he flashed her a goofy smile before patting her shoulder.
"No seriously Ben, you've saved me twice now in the last 24 hours. If you manage to rescue me a third time by tonight, I'm pretty sure you'll be breaking some sort of record," the girl chuckled and blushed slightly before turning away from him to face the ground.
"Well, am I supposed to just wait around for another chance to be your hero?" He smirked at her and nudged her arm playfully. An hour ago, Ben was a nervous wreck. But actually, talking with her and being around her? That was a breeze. It all felt so natural to him. To both of them.
"Actually, I was wondering if I could be the one waiting around for you?" She asked and Ben's eyebrow raised curiously as her face began heating up.
"I-I just meant, do you mind if I crash at your place tonight? I really don't think that I should be home tonight. If the answer's no that's fine! I'm sorry I shouldn't even ask we barely know each other and-"
"Of course you can come over. I'll drive you home too, don't worry about it" Ben responds, smiling at her patiently in an attempt to get her to disarm.
"That would be so nice... thanks, Ben. I owe you one." She smiled.
Just then, the bell rang, and the two parted ways to attend their separate AP classes because of course, they're in AP classes.
Nerds (affectionate).
