" in front of all your stupid friends "
It was the question Betty was dreading the most. She finished taking a long sip from her iced coffee and awkwardly laughed.
"Sorry, what?" she said, pretending she didn't just hear what her friend Willow said.
"I said, when are we going to meet this boyfriend of yours?" the raven haired girl said, raising her eyebrows. "Or girlfriend. Whatever the fuck they go by."
"You could just say partner, Will. Gender-neutral." Cassie suggested.
" James is fine with either, " Betty answered, even though, now to think of it, James hadn't discussed it at all. Still, he had said he was okay with gendered terms so it must be alright. Yet Betty didn't want to discuss this with her "friends", they were- er, not quite understanding of things like these. She shot a glare at Inez, she spilled the beans in the first place, the whole reason she's stuck in this uncomfortable reason.
" Come on, Betty, just let us meet him. You don't have to be ashamed," Curly-haired Maria drawled, with a sickly sweet tone.
" The fuck Maria, I'm not ashamed of James." Betty hotly shot back. And she wasn't. If anything, she was ashamed of her friends. James was the first non-cishet boy she dated, and Willow, Maria and been acting weirder than ever. Betty knew that in her heart, she couldn't stand even talking to them for a short while. She felt suffocated in her own circle of mates, yet she couldn't bring herself to get away from them. It had something to do with her fixation on nostalgia. She didn't like change, or growing out of things she used to like. She held on to things that she convinced herself still had meaning to her when in reality it didn't.
" Then tell him to come meet us. So we can see if he's worthy of you and all that shit" Maria giggled.
" Yall aren't my mom, " Betty rolled her eyes. Her own mother didn't even know about James.
" Call James right now. We'll have the rest of lunch with her." Cassie said.
" I don't even know where she is- "
"Call him then?"
" Why can't you just talk to her another time-"
" Because we all know you'll just keep postponing and we'll never meet him until like, graduation. "
They knew her all too well.
" Well, I do know that James goes out of school for lunch, so you'll have to wait until after school. " Betty reluctantly said.
" Great. " Cassie smiled.
