There was a party for us on a boat a few days later, and I was at the bar with Alicia and Sue, getting drinks.

“I’m just not a partier,” I insisted. “I mean, I’ll make it really public and obvious, but I want to go back, and work on Jenny. I’m so close-” I started, but Sue shoved glass of champagne in my hand.

“Party,” she ordered. “You can work tomorrow.”

“Yeah, how often do you have a party in your honor,” Alicia asked.

“Once a year, on my birthday. I called it ‘the surprise party I never ask for’,” I told her, drinking the champagne.

“Don’t worry, honey, we’ll get you in the partying mood. Or at the very least make Johnny get you in the mood,” she said, laughing.

I glared, forgetting that she was blind.

“Whatever,” I grumbled, and then saw Justin, my best friend, and his husband Matt.

“Son of a bitch,” I said, and gave Justin a huge hug. “You dragged yourself out of the lab for me?”

“If you can do it, I can do it,” he said, and I laughed.

“Matt,” I said, giving him a hug too. Usually if I called, I got Matt first, and he’d talk with me until Justin could get on the line. He was hilarious, always telling me embarrassing stories of what Justin had done that week.

“So, where’s Johnny Storm?” Matt said, looking around the party.

“In the center of a gaggle of girls,” I said dryly, pointing over to him.

“Oh, well, we just need to fix that,” he said, and dipped me, pretending to kiss me. When he brought me back up, he and Justin were laughing. I was trying to glare, but they were infectious.

“You’re such an ass,” I said, hitting his shoulder.

“Hey, Mags,” Johnny said, coming over to wrap his arm around my waist. Oh, I see, now he was going to acknowledge me. I looked at Matt, giving him props.

“Hey, Johnny,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Who’s this,” he asked, pulling me tight to his side, eyeing Matt. Matt looked at me, trying not to laugh. Justin wasn’t having anymore luck.

“This is Justin, and Matt,” I said, gesturing to them both.

“Nice to meet you,” he said, and shook Justin’s hand, but glared at Matt still. There was a long beat of silence between the three of us, before all of us laughing.

“I can’t do it,” Justin said, walking off to laugh.

“What? What?” Johnny asked, looking between us, confused.

“Matt and Justin are married,” I said. “I was Justin’s maid of honor.”

“Then why were you…” he said, and looked at Matt confused.
