There is vastness beyond these clouds
At day, they seem part of the earth we live in
Yet at night, we can see it is more than that
that's the only time I can see their existence
The only time I am reminded
Someone greater is out there
Molding us, watching over us, guiding us
Making each star twinkle in comfort
Just like your smile.

FIVE YEARS AGO
Irene walked with me to the cottage earlier and spent watching the stars too. For the first time, I have someone to share this evening with. It seemed surreal, yet I was sitting beside her while breathing the same winter air as her. Somehow, the night doesn't seem cold at all.
Thank you, God, for this. I never thought I could have the courage to ask her if she wanted to join my evening strolls. I'm not expecting anything, of course. To be her friend is enough, but this night is golden.
Should a guy feel this way? Is it normal to feel all giddy and wanting to squeal in delight like a girl? I've seen my sister squeal in delight whenever she'd talk about her crushes at school. Would a guy be allowed? I think I'll ask her to go to my supplier's place too. A road trip sounds good... or would that be too soon?
Well, it's not like a date right? It's official business, besides, as the bookstore manager, she should know more about Sweet Night. I've always wanted to share this with her.
She was but a dream yet when Irene held my earlier hand, I felt her tenderness. When Irene leaned on my shoulder, I felt comforted. When she asked me those questions about my past, I can't help but be honest. I'm grateful for the company. Besides my family, I feel like finally I have someone to share more of myself with.
I'll sleep well tonight. It's a very sweet night.
Eddie closed his journal and let out a giggle. He must be going mad, he thought, then let out a deep sigh as he pulled himself together. He reached for a notepad and started writing "Fix the cottage roof this weekend."
Yes, he should fix the cottage roof. He wanted to give her a better look at the stars earlier but had to settle for the bench after the roof creaked when he climbed it.
Eddie posted the note on a whiteboard by the bookstore counter. He then opened his laptop and started typing. After a while, he printed it and raised it proudly.
"This should do it," Eddie beamed.
Yes, tomorrow he'd visit his bookstore suppliers with Irene. He just printed out an announcement to post on the door in case someone would come.
That's settled, he thought as he marched outside with the announcement. Now, the only thing left is to send a message to Irene.
As Eddie was about to type in a message, his mind suddenly went blank. How should he tell her they were going on a road trip?
No, it's a business trip, Eddie reminded himself. They'd just have to take a long drive going there. It was sudden and she'll surely be surprised but, it was now or never.
Now, it's time to type.
