his voice, her voice

Jadon enjoyed being the centre of attention. The voice, the topic and the orator. To voice his opinions and thoughts in a discussion; to turn the conversation on him; to gain attention from everyone and anyone. All of that was simply what he was known for, aside from his profession. Not only by the public, but also his friends and family. He projected this attitude everywhere he went. And everything about his persona was recipocated. Being talkative and vocal in almost every conversation made him a good speaker under any circumstance.

Hearing his voice was a norm; it was almost weird for Jadon's voice to be absent in a conversation. The voices, the atmosphere, the energy—that was all on him. He set a conversation in motion, have it going and would be the one to end. If he wasn't there, if a talking point went on without him then the conversation could only go so far in terms of interest and enthusiasm. To talk, to discuss, they weren't exactly dependent on Jadon, but he could make them definitely better compared to when he wasn't included.

But no one seemed phased by his lack of participation when his girlfriend spoke in his place.

At the Man Utd's team dinner many favoured Y/N over Jadon, their very own player. Small talk with Jadon, long conversation with Y/N; brief laughs with Jadon, laughter with Y/N with the topic ranging to be anything. She was new to every face and figure yet she made herself comfortable and recognised in an unfamiliar surrounding. Jadon was everything she wasn't—recognised, known, famous—yet everyone turned to Y/N, and enjoyed everything she had to say. Willing to discuss rather than forced into discussion.

She spoke with confidence and eloquence in her voice, something you wouldn't want to drift away from. It was soothing in motion, easy and steady to take in as one. And not only could she speak but she also could listen. To sit back and allow others to speak their opinions, allowing her voice to rest and dawn over others. So she could carry a conversation with her words, or slow down a discussion with her absence from it.

It wasn't something to fantasise or fathom over, Y/N wouldn't say so, at least. Though what it did ensure was, whether talking or not, she was still always a part of the conversation. The absence or presence of her voice deemed little to nothing about her participation in anything. She invited and welcomed herself in any discussion, disregarding the idea of being overconfident. Asked for by others rather than asking others.

Turning away from Anthony, Y/N noticed Jadon's retired attitude and laughed. He acted the same when he felt as if she wasn't giving him enough attention. "What's up with you?" Familiar to his antics, she took a hold of hand as an act of comfort. Even if that act of comfort seemed so dramatic and unnecessary.

His eyes glanced at their intertwined fingers and let them sway slowly. Taking in a deep breath, he looked to his girlfriend. "How is it that my mates are talking to you more than me?"

He almost felt out of place. To be neither the voice, the speaker nor the orator. This wasn't jealousy, or maybe it was, what he felt. Never would he hold Y/N back of interacting with those closest to him, of course not. But it was in times like this where he was reduced to Y/N's background shadow really placed his ego on a pedestal. Even with everything he had to offer—whether through character, profession, or personality—someone else could do the bare minimum and still out-do him.

It wasn't even that no one wanted to talk to him. No one grew tired of Jadon and everything he had to offer. Instead, others preferred to discuss with a new face rather than a familiar one. Y/N proved to be more than just a plus-one.

"I don't know," Y/N gave a half shrug. A smirk played on her face. "Have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe, I'm the better one out of the two of us?"

Jadon leaned his head back in laughter, shaking his head. "Nah, I can't let you claim that."

"I already did," she said. Anyone would deem her as the main character between the two. Patting his chest, she continued, "Ask any of your teammates. They can vouch for me."

Soon the two laughed of the situation as the understood the ridiculous nature of everything. They found comedy and laughter in everything, whether minor or large, something that helped them pass over every problem they encountered together.

After a while she let Jadon converse with his teammates in refined solace, digressing from contributing in any further conversations. Responses replaced with nods, laughter replaced with giggles. She took a step back to make room for Jadon to do more than previously. She understood his want to talk and speak with everyone, and didn't want to take that away from him. His talkative persona was almost deprived of its sole purpose: to talk. It was a time for him to bond and interact with his teammates, his friends, and there was no need in holding him back of that good time.
