After that day Hana's pranks all but stopped.
Guess what I said did change her mind then.
What I said back there about her being adopted was the harsh reality of our situation.
We would be separated soon, it was inevitable.
But when it finally happened, it was beyond my imagination.
Every few years adventurers from the guild came to play with the children and provide them with some form of entertainment by using magic.
At least that's what I overheard from the others.
I was very excited by the possibility of seeing magic with my own eyes, rather than imagining the spells as Hana described them to me.
But even that happiness was taken from me.
A few days before they arrived the head caretaker called me to her office.
I knock at her door.
"Enter." Replies a stern voice.
I do just that, "You called for me headmaster?" I try to hide the venom in my tone.
And judging from her raised eyebrow it didn't work.
"Yes, as it seems adventurers from the adventurer guild will be arriving here tomorrow,"
"Ok?" I don't see what that has got to do with me.
"You will stay in your room, I don't want you to tarnish our reputation by being there." She replies coldly.
"What? You don't want them to know exactly how cruel you can be? That you hate a child simply for his eyes?"
"I will not have you talk back to me! Now leave!" She fumed.
"Damn hag..." I mutter as I leave the room.
I should have expected this from them.
They take away even the smallest bit of happiness from me.
The only reason they haven't separated Hana from me is because she is persistent enough to come find me even after being warned not to.
Hana finds me in my usual spot, I've long since given up on finding new places to sleep in.
Noticing my sulking she asks me ,"Why are you sad Toby?"
I explain to her exactly why.
"Those monsters!" She begins advancing towards the head caretakers door.
"Hana stop." I say sternly.
"But-"
"But nothing! I've been dealing with them treating me like this for years. I'll be alright. You will get into big trouble if you make a fuss over this."
"But you were so excited for it!"
I sigh, "Yeah, I am. But we can't do anything about it without facing bad consequences."
She struggles to find a counter arguement for that, before deciding on an answer, "If you won't join, neither will I."
"What? You can't just do that Hana!"
"Or what they will force me to be there? I don't think so." She replies, as stubborn as ever.
It was quite a touching statement. The fact that she would be willing to throw away something she too was looking forward to for my sake... Well it's a hard feeling to describe, I just know I am grateful.
