"Try this dress, let me see if it fits properly", said my mom.
I was born in a middle class family, my dad worked real hard in a factory usually 12-16 hours a day and mom contributed to the household by her talent of tailoring.
It was early in my life when I was around 10 years of age. I had been a pretty skinny boy. Not that much into sports but a lot into studies. So used to grounded in my books and help my mom with some or the other household work.
My mother owned a good name in our locality as one of the best and cheapest tailor around. From sarees, blouses to dresses and much more she would get on her machine.
This was the first instance, that I remember.
She had got a nice Punjabi salwar kameez from one of her clients, which needed a little bit trimming down in the waist region as the client had lost some weight.
My mom did the alterations and then called me to try it on.I was shocked, "why do you want me to wear it? I am a boy, did you forget that?"
To which she casually replies, "it is for a client who has the exact body size like you. Just try it on so that I can see if I have to do any more changes in it."Me being the shy kinda guy, closed the door the window curtains, took off my T-shirt and stood in front of her.
She instructed me to put both my hands up in the air.
Standing in front of my mom with both my hands raised and head down, she slid the most beautiful Punjabi kameez on me. It was plain with no embroidery or any of the fancy stuff. Yellow in colour with red and green coloured design on it which extended a little below my knee.
Mom stared at me for couple of minutes, turning me side to side.
Gave a little pull here and there of the dress and after then was satisfied, she took it.After a couple of years, I did regret not watching myself in the mirror but till today I still am able to feel the sensation, the nervousness, the excitement of wearing it.
As of today, I am 28 years old, living abroad, have a good job in marketing.
I wanted to share my experiences and what better way then writing them down.
Fun and casual, enjoy the trip.
