last week, i saw you at the grocery store. you were standing in front of me at the checkout. seconds before, when i approached the line, a lump created in my throat when i saw you. your eyes were already fixated on me – even before i saw you. you sent me one of your adorable smiles. when i was close enough and eventually comprehended what was going on, i sent a smile back. i hadn’t noticed before how tall you actually are and couldn’t help but grin at our height difference.

it was the first time i saw you alone, without any of your friends and i wondered why you were at the grocer’s on your own. maybe you thought the same thing about me. carefully, i put the loaf of bread i had to buy for my mother on the conveyer belt. you were already paying for your can of coke and chocolate bar.

by the time i came outside, a plastic bag containing the bread in my hand, you already hopped onto your bike. as you drove past, you mouthed a ‘bye’ at me.

before i could realize what was going on, you were already rounding the corner.
