"Out on our own, dreaming in a world that we both know is out of our control..."With my eyes closed and my head leaning on the car window, my earphones were blasting music into my ears like they always did. A tap on my shoulder brings my attention to my mom who has this extreme look of worry on her face as if I had just awoken from a fifteen-year coma. "We're here, beta," she says, tears pooling in her eyes.
"Ma, come on, don't cry, at least not yet. I'm not leaving forever, you know." I try to comfort her, but it doesn't work.
I look out the window and there it is, Ninoy Aquino International Airport, where I was about to get on a flight with basically all of my belongings and head to the other side of the world for university.
I take a deep breath and open the car door, and help my mom and siblings unload my bags from the trunk.
"Okay, I think that's it, that's everything," my younger brother says.
We head toward the entrance of the airport where I go through my checklist of important documents once again. Once I make sure I have everything, I say goodbye to my siblings. My sister, who's practically my best friend, cried, and my brother pretended to be relieved at my leaving but gave me a hug before I entered, which is unusual cause he isn't really good at emotions.
To be fair, none of us are.
Because I'm a minor, they're allowing my mother to accompany me until I reach the gate but I don't think it's a good idea cause she's just gonna keep crying, and I don't think I can handle both of our tears while I get past all the different forms of security so she just accompanies me until I'm done checking my bags in.
She cries, and I shed a couple of tears, and when we finally say goodbye, "Remember, don't let anybody take advantage of you, be strong, and work hard, beta. I love you" she says. "I love you too" I reply with a wide smile.
"Okay, I have to go now, message me before you take off and when you land, okay?" I nod, give her a hug, and start heading toward the next security checkpoint, wiping my tears and reminding myself how excited I am to finally leave.
After an hour of checkpoints and stress, I finally reached my gate. We began boarding the plane, and because I got a free business class upgrade from a family friend, I headed into the plane as one of the first passengers. I send one final message to my mom, my friends and siblings as I take my seat on the plane and get settled.
'Just finished boarding, we're about to take off'
'Ok beta, have a safe flight. Let me know when you reach'
'Have a safe flight broski, the house is so much quieter now'
'Have a safe flight, let me know when you land. Also, check the front pocket of your backpack.'
'Have a safe flight, I already miss you so much. Don't forget to bring me a boyfriend and to film your first look at your dorm room for me. I love you <3'
I checked the front compartment of my huge backpack only to find an envelope filled with printed out pictures of my friends, my dog, my siblings, and memories in Manila with notes behind each of them. I smile and promise myself not to cry. I reply to them and put my phone on aeroplane mode as the pilot announces take-off.
Many hours, and a long layover after...
I rub my eyes as the pilot makes an announcement "Good day, passengers, it is currently 7:20 am in Abu Dhabi, and 11:35 am in London, England. We have officially landed at Heathrow Airport. Have a good day, and thank you for flying with Etihad Airways"
Once I depart from the aeroplane, I stretch my arms and yawn. I grabbed my bags and headed outside Heathrow airport, waiting for my aunt to pick me up when I realized where I was.
I was in London...waiting for my aunt to pick me up...so I can live with her in London for two days...before I get a train to Norwich...where I'm going to live...for the next six months...on my own...without my mom.
I felt like throwing up and screaming for joy at the same time. I'm finally fucking here.
Two days pass very quickly, and I'm at the train station with my huge amounts of luggage and my aunt who insisted on being with me on the four-hour journey to Norwich which honestly, I really appreciate. She's extremely loaded and bought us an entire first-class carriage (which usually fits four people) for me, her, and my stuff.
We aren't really close yet. In fact, this was my first ever time meeting her in real life, but she's extremely cool and I'm so sure we're going to get along. We buy ourselves some snacks for the ride and find our seats in no time.
I'm still quite jet-lagged and sleep the entire way to Norwich. When we reach, we head straight to the university where I registered and they handed us these huge bin-type things to put all of my belongings in to bring to the dorm, my dorm key, a pamphlet, and some instructions on where to get my student I.D. and official UEA lanyard.
I head to my dorm with all of my stuff packed into luggage and say thank you to my aunt before she leaves me. I film my entrance into my dorm with a tiny, silver Samsung camera for my best friend and set all of my stuff inside.
After returning the bins, I headed straight to get my student I.D. picture taken. I was told about freshman week which starts tomorrow, and which I'm genuinely so excited about. I'll be able to meet new people and hopefully make new friends, which was one thing I was always scared would never happen for some reason.
I spent the rest of the day decorating my room and buying grocery items. By the time I was done, I called my mom and spoke to my best friend for a short while then fell asleep quickly after that. I was so exhausted I missed dinner.
I'm officially living alone. It hasn't really settled in my head yet, but I'm sure I'll have a freak out soon enough.
