The deputy took notes. "Can you recall the events around August eighth, the day Mallory went missing?"
Chapter Three 8/8/2021
He had been coming in for a while by this point. I can only remember this because it was the first time he submitted a mobile order, so I was finally able to learn his name. Devlin Williams. An interesting name to say the least. He came into my work around the usual time, 9:45, 15 minutes before close, and told me "I apologize Cecelia, but our visit today has to be short." I gave him his order and he left.
The more I think about it, the more I am irritated that I never saw the signs or trusted my gut. Everything in my body told me to run when I saw him, but that would have only triggered our destined outcome before either of us was ready. Besides, I have understood my whole life that I am rather socially awkward, so perhaps I was mistaking his harmless flirting and interest as something sinister. At least that is what my whole stand seemed to think.
Tucker caught on to Devlin's recurring visits first, then it spread through the entire stand. He always ordered an extra-thick peanut butter milkshake. It got to the point where whenever my coworkers saw that order on the screen, they would peek their heads over to the front counter. It became a joke. The whole stand started to tease me about my secret admirer, but in the end, all he did was creep me out. Always endearing, but his eyes never looked at me.
I knew whenever I heard the click of his shoes enter the store, I would spend the rest of the night in a very uneasy trance.
