Effie pov
7th of august 1964
The news came as a surprise, and honestly I'm a wee bit scared. I'm not sure if I'm prepared to be going back home after all these years, even though i grew up there and was surrounded by people who i had thought as family, i haven't been back there since my mother passed. Even though its been 10 years, she still lingers in my mind daily and I'm afraid that once I'm back in Liverpool my grief will hit me all over again."Hurry up Effie! We will miss the train." my uncle shouted up the stairs. I ignored him as i put away my journal that i hoped one day would be filled with anything that doesn't have a connection to my late mother, i started to rush to put it in my bag as i heard my carnaptious uncles footsteps beginning to get closer to my room. "Effie hen, we really need to get a move on." He said quickly "Alright, let's get a move on. I've been waiting ages." I said sarcastically with a chuckle as i begin to leave the room with my bag in hand, i heard my uncle chuckle lowly as he began to follow me downstairs.
The car journey to the train station was dreadfully boring as the radio in the car only played opera as it was my uncles favourite. Personally i prefer music with a rhythm and also that doesn't hurt my ears, as we are waiting for the train i can't seem to stop thinking about how I should be more sad towards leaving Scotland. Even though I'm leaving my whole life behind to go to Liverpool i cant help but to feel a sense of guilt in leaving my friends so suddenly. I get snapped out of my thoughts as my uncle started to get up off the chair as the train came into the station, we got on the train as i said goodbye to Scotland quietly as we sat down my uncle handed me a newspaper with a crossword to complete. After the silent train ride we soon arrived in Liverpool, as i stepped off the train onto the platform i couldn't help but feel like i belonged there like this was the place i needed to be.
"What do you think of it?" My uncle asked as i began roaming the house, it was quite small and cosy. "Well, i think its splendid" i said with a mocked English accent. "Well, you better go unpack your bags cause we will be here for a while." He said nonchalantly as he was still looking around. "Do you mind popping out to the shop to get milk hen?" He asked as he looked at me. "Alright." i said with a smile, i was excited to explore. "While your out try to stay out of trouble." He said as he didn't even give me a chance to answer as he walked up to his room upstairs. I was thankful that my room was downstairs as it was quite unusual but i guess it just must be Liverpool. "I'm going now, bye!" I shouted upstairs to my uncle as i started heading out the front door.
As i was walking down the streets of Liverpool I couldn't help but notice how relaxing it was just to go on a wander i tried to stay close to our new house as i didn't want to get lost, Imagine i got lost in my first hour of only being in Liverpool i thought with a snicker. I got pulled out my thoughts as i heard people behind me talking to each other, i was quite embarrassed as they could've heard me laughing to myself and I would be made out as some sort of madman and just like a nightmare coming true one of them shouted out to who i assume was me "what's so funny love?" And my first thought was to turn around and see who the mystery man was. I just continued walking and i heard footsteps behind me speed up as i felt a presence beside me, i turned my head to find him already starring at me. A confused look flashed over his face but suddenly went back to normal. "Are you deaf?" He said mocking sign language, i let out a laugh before shaking my head. "So then are ye going to answer me question?" He said as he began to get closer to me, I'm not going to lie he was a bonnie lad. "What would that be?" I said as i turned to face him again as i stopped walking. I could tell he was surprised by my accent. "You're from Scotland?" He said confused. "Wow nothing gets past you" i say with sarcastic tone as i begin walking again. "Wait!" He said catching up to me again. "What's your name?" He asked getting closer again. "Effie and where the closest shop is?" i said tilting my head as I remembered there was someone else, i turned around to see a boy looking as if he was waiting for someone quite a long way away, i turn back around as i heard the boy who was following me begin to talk. "I'm John, there's a shop if ye just keep walking straight forward." He stopped walking and turned around to go back to the boy he was walking with. I continued walking as i was left confused and curious why he wanted to talk to me, i just shrugged as i picked up milk and started making my way back to the new house. On the way back i looked around for the strange and nosy lad named John, i was thankful i didn't bump into him again.
