When you see ** play the song above

-Welcome to New York by Taylor Swift-

"Kate! You need to hurry up if you want to get there on time" my mother yells as I am frantically trying to make sure I don't forget anything.

"Coming." I grab my last couple of bags and stuff it in the back of the car.

As I go around to the other side, I start to hear a slight sound of sniffling. I turn the corner only to see my mom trying to hide the fact that she is crying.

"Mom, it's okay. Please don't cry. " I say as I pull her into a tight hug.

"But my baby is leaving me." she says, continuing to cry into our hug.

It's always just been me and my mom. My dad left when I was younger and my older brother moved out a couple years ago and hasn't tried to contact anyone since.

I currently live in a small town in Maryland. Now moving to New York city to start my job working for The New York Times. It's been my biggest goal since I was a little girl to work with them. I've always been very fond of reading and writing. So working with them is a dream come true.

"It's only a three and a half hour drive. I can always come and visit you." I say as she holds tighter as I attempt to let go.

"I promise I will text you and call you every chance I get" I say as she starts to release from the hug.

"Promise me" she says. "Please promise me you won't run off like your brother and cut me off".

"I promise. Don't worry, you'll get lots of pictures of me and the girls".

"The girls" is referring to my two best friends, Hailey and Stephanie. They're also coming to live with me in New York. I've known them since I was 5. We grew up together and stayed pretty close throughout high school.

After high school I went to college and got my bachelor's in journaling and creative writing.

"Okay mom, I have to go. I will call you as soon as I get there. I can even Facetime you and give you a tour once we unpack and everything if you want."

"Haha I would love that Kate. Okay honey, you have to get going. I love you so much and I know you'll do great things.

"I love you too mom." I say as I walk away to the car.

Muffin barks at mom. "I love you too Muffin" she says

I enter the car and start to pull out of the driveway until I see my mother's sad face out of the rear view mirror. Heartbroken, I continue onto the highway.

**

"Wow. I'm finally here. The Big Apple." I say to myself as I admire all the buildings and the lights that are surrounding me.

"I finally did it." I say to myself feeling proud.

After all this time dreaming about being here I'm finally here. All my hard work has paid off. All of the sleepless nights studying for SATs, staying after school for hours to do extra credit to boost up my grade as much as possible and I'm finally here.

I roll down the windows to enjoy the dusk breeze, allowing it to fill my car as the music is blaring.

Welcome to New York

It's been waiting for ya, Welcome to New York

Welcome to New York

After my jam sesh in the car, I arrive at the apartment and see Hailey and Steph there waiting for me. They started unpacking their boxes and loading them onto carts so it's easier to bring up to the room.

"HEYYYYY" I hear as Stephanie runs over and attacks me with a big hug.

"Hi Muffin!" she says while giving him lots of love.

"How've you been? She says as I turn and give Hailey a hug.

"Trying to survive" I say as I start unloading my boxes onto another cart. "And you guys? I know y'all have been traveling together a lot."

"Yes it's been great! We've been having a blast." Steph says as she helps me take some things out of my car.

"Where'd y'all go?" I ask, very excited to hear all about their stories.

"London, Greece, and France." Hailey says, sounding very happy.

"You'll need to tell me more about them when you get the chance." I tell them.

Once everything is packed onto the carts, the three of us head upstairs and explore the apartment, Hailey scouting out which room she wants first and Steph just wandering around the place trying to get a feel of it. All of us go to our room and start unpacking and as soon as I walk into mine I hear Steph scream.

Me and Hailey immediately ran to her worried something had happened.

"DAMN LOOK AT THE FUCKING VIEW" she yells sounding ecstatic over it.

"Stop fucking doing that Steph" I say sounding annoyed.

When we were younger me, Steph, and Hailey would always be playing outside and Steph would scream because she thought something was pretty or because she got excited about something. We undoubtedly go and check on her to make sure she's okay. Most of the time it was just a pretty butterfly she saw or seeing a kid do tricks on a bike."

"Ok, Ok, I'm sorry. But look at the view! We can even see Time Square from here." she says feeling over the moon about the view she has from her window.

"We should go later." I say, knowing Time Square is one of my favorite parts of the city.

"Yes! We have to go." Hailey says, sounding just as excited as I am.

"Lets get as much unpacked as we can before going out." I say.

A couple hours later passed and we had finished unpacking all of our clothes, food items, toiletries, and dog food of course for Muffin. We put all of the boxes with things that need to be built like side tables, the entertainment center, etc.

We all get out of our clothes that we rode in up here. Got in more casual wear. Fix our hair and makeup. Now it's time to head out and enjoy the city.
