Should I Write This?

On the forums of writing websites, I answer a lot of questions in as much detail as I feel the question needs. This means I probably overdo it and can write an essay just to answer simple questions. That being said, I've noticed that there seem to be some questions that are asked repeatedly, so I just copy and paste my answers from the previous time I answered the question. Now I'm at the point that I'm having trouble finding those answers, so I've decided to put them all in one place. Let's start with the most asked question of all time.

Yes! Always yes! Just write your story and write how you want to write it! At least one person will like it and read it.

If all you care about is numbers, statistics, reads, or getting popular, then you'll always double-guess yourself, you won't be happy with your writing or what you're writing, and you'll always be writing what other people want you to write. While you write with ideas you didn't create, that idea you had will still be stewing in the back of your mind. What also ends up happening is if you do write with others' ideas, there will come a time when reads drop, and you'll more than likely end up giving up on the story.

The only reason why I would say not to post the story is if it's against the website's rules. If it isn't against the rules per se, but if it treads over ethics and morals, then don't be graphic with it.

Write your story, and to heck with any nay-sayers. If your idea doesn't end up working out, that's fine. That's how people learn. You don't learn anything if you don't try.
