The feast had come before the sorting, apparently every first year had fallen in the lake by some miracle. Barty and Everett threw mashed potatoes at each other across the table while Davina cursed them out and pleaded with them to stop. Regulus took hardly any notice, deep within his book,

"Reg, honestly, show some interest in being back at school," Maud spoke. She had chosen to sit right next to him, their thighs touching. Regulus thought she was so close she may as well have sat on his lap, "Are you even listening?" She sounded annoyed this time,

"Sorry, good book," he said, not putting it down,

"What's it called?"

"Alice in wonderland," he prayed she would end the conversation after this, but she didn't,

"Never heard of it," God why is she still speaking,

"It's a muggle book," he shoved a bite of pie in his mouth hoping that this would excuse him from continuing to speak. She scrunched up her nose at his mention of muggles,

"Why do you read those muggle books? Surely they can't be interesting," she sounded more annoyed, good be annoyed, stop talking,

"I think it's interesting, I like the ones about magic. It's funny that muggles dream and write about everything we have,"

"Lord, you get any more interested in muggle artefacts and you'll turn out like your brother," Maud laughed, Regulus did not. He looked up from his book and locked eyes with Barty, he had heard what Maud said,

"Hey Reg, do you wanna show me what you were talking about on the train?" Barty motioned for them to leave for the dorms, thank god for Barty. Regulus nodded and closed his book, the two of them walked towards the exit of the hall in silence,

"Did I say something?" He heard Maud ask as he walked away.

Barty had somehow already acquired the password to the Slytherin dorms, they slunk up towards their dorm. Barty flopped onto his bed while Regulus unlocked his trunk,

"Be honest Reg, do you miss him?" Barty spoke. Regulus was silent for a moment,

"No, I hate him. The fact I'm forced into this castle with him makes me sick," Barty nodded, while Regulus began transfiguring his chocolate frogs back into alcohol and cigarettes,

"Right, you just seemed a bit upset with Maud,"

"That wasn't because I miss him, that was because she was practically sitting on me, and interrupting me with stupid questions," Barty laughed and Regulus turned around, "What?"

"She fancies you,"

"No she doesn't,"

"Davina told me,"

"Davina's a bitch, she's messing with us to see what happens," Regulus rolled his eyes, Barty tensed slightly when Regulus called Davina a bitch, what is that about,

"Maud has fancied you since you two were kids, according to Ev,"

"Everett is an idiot," Regulus said coolly,

"Stop talking shit on our friends or I'll have to hit you," Barty laughed, Regulus mustered a smile,

"Come here," Regulus motioned and Barty came and stood beside him, looking down at Regulus' trunk on the bed,

"Bloody hell! How did yo-

"Leopold gave it all to me, gonna sell it. I'll probably get Crabbe to distribute it, I don't wanna get caught with any of it," Regulus smirked,

"You're a manipulative prick Reg," Barty laughed picking up a bottle of fire whiskey, "Shall we?"
